This workshop is designed for higher level interpreters who want to improve their skills in analyzing semantic intent and the signs they choose in discourse. Participants will be led through a variety of activities to discuss semantic meaning, innuendo, and sign choices. The Educational Objectives of the workshop are to:

Define semantics and demonstrate semantic use in ASL
Identify sample semantic errors on PowerPoint presentation
Identify sample sentences used correctly on PowerPoint presentation.
Demonstrate ability to create sample sentences/short stories using semantic pairs/triads demonstrating correct usage.

Demonstration and practice of example concepts will be provided. Focus will be on connotative meaning in ASL. Often, the topic of “conceptual accuracy” views ASL concepts from an English-dominant translation perspective. This workshop will focus on semantic intent and sign choices from an ASL-dominant and meaning-based perspective. Participants may be divided into small groups. Portions of the workshop may be presented in ASL only.

TSID is an Approved RID CMP Sponsor for Continuing Education Activities. This Professional Studies program is offered for .6 CEUs at the Some Content Knowledge Level.
