Illuminations Arts Shadowed performance of Gingerbread Man

September 20, 2006

Dear Educator,

Illuminations Arts is thrilled to announce two shadow interpreted performances available to you and your students. Illuminations Arts collaborates this season with Express Children’s Theatre to shadow the production of The Gingerbread Man on December 14th at Heinen Theatre on the Houston Community College Central Campus. A. D. Players has invited Illuminations Arts to shadow interpret Where the Red Fern Grows on March 23rd at the Miller Outdoor Theatre at 11 am.

The Gingerbread Man by Kevin Reese is a delightful holiday musical production. Tyler and Corrie’s mom has made the best Gingerbread Man ever! He can sing, dance and play games. There’s just one problem, they can’t get him to stay still for a moment, not even for the family’s big holiday party.

As you may know, Illuminations Arts has provided interpreting for various theatres, large and small, in the Houston area for twenty years. As well as working with A.D. Players and Express Children’s Theatre, we have worked with other professional organizations such as Alley Theatre, InterActive Theater, and University of Houston Children’s Theatre Festival making their performances accessible to deaf and hard of hearing audiences. Shadow interpreted performances are much more integrated than standard theatrical interpreting. Shadowing allows for the full artistic impact of the play because the speaking actors are “shadowed” by an actor portraying the same character through American Sign Language. The performers work as a team, creating two sides of the same character through their lines, blocking and interaction on stage.

The December 14th shadowed performances of The Gingerbread Man will be at Heinen Theatre on the Central Campus of Houston Community College at 9:30 am & 11:00 am. Tickets are $8.00 per person and discounted tickets are available for groups of ten or more. Tickets for Where the Red Fern Grows free of charge but must be reserved in advance. Reservations for seats in the deaf/hard of hearing section will be taken on a first-come first-served basis. To order tickets for any of these performances or for more information on these performances, please call Illuminations Arts at 713-529-6909 (TTY/ VP) or 713-529-6910 (V) or e-mail [email protected].

We hope to see you at these wonderful performances.

Sincerely,

Susan Jackson
