Advisory Committee on Qualifications for Health Care Translators and
Interpreters
HHSC is accepting applications for membership on the Advisory Committee on
Qualifications for Health Care Translators and Interpreters. The committee
will help recommend qualifications and standards for health care translators
and interpreters. Applications are due Oct. 7, 2009.
Background
The Advisory Committee on Qualifications for Health Care Translators and
Interpreters was created by House Bill 233 from the 81st Legislature to help
HHSC in recommending qualifications and standards for health care
translators and interpreters.
Members
Applications are being accepted from:
* Professional translators and interpreters associations.
* Health care interpreters who work with people with limited English proficiency.
* Health care interpreters who work with people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
* Mental health services provider.
* Hospitals.
* Insurance industry.
* Business entities that provide translators and interpreters to health care practitioners.
* Organizations that provide services to immigrants and refugees.
* Institutions of higher learning.
* Health care practitioners.
* Consumers with limited English proficiency.
* Consumers who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Membership on the committee requires regular participation in committee
meetings up to six times per year. Committee members will not receive
compensation for participation on the committee and will be responsible for
their own travel expenses.
