While Clerc’s Children is designed for parents of Deaf toddlers, it is also
beneficial to all toddlers because the hand coordination naturally develops
among infants/toddlers before the vocal cord does. So America Sign Language
(ASL) meets the child’s cognitive development and language acquisition needs
at early age before speaking could. This is why signing among hearing
infants is popular however signing is not encouraged or is lightly mentioned
to the parents whose infant had just failed newborn hearing screen because
of myth and misinformation such as Sign Language interferes with speaking
skills among deaf children however research shows differently.

“First there has never been an real evidence that learning to sign
interferes with Deaf Children’s learning to speak. In fact, early sign
language consistently has been shown to have beneficial effects on learning
spoken language.”
