This conference brings together representatives of the Career Services and
the Disability Student Services offices with institutions of higher
education, and a goal of developing collaborative relationships between
those programs to better prepare students who are deaf of hard of hearing
for career search. Employers are included so as to identify innovative
methods of recruiting persons who are deaf or hard of hearing as potential
employees.

Opening Keynote: Joe Bontke of Houston, Outreach Manger and Ombudsman, U.S.
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Houston District Office.

Overview: “Backpacks and Baggage” – The major barriers to achievement by
people with disabilities in our society continues to be universal
stereotyped thinking and assumptions about what people can and cannot do.
The fact is that the range of skills and abilities of persons within any
disability group is enormous. The need is to get rid of stereotypical images
and view each individual as just that: “an individual.” This training
session will explore the “baggage of our own backpacks” and attempt to
abolish old perceptions and add new perspectives.

Sponsors: The Alamo Committee on Career Development for People with Hearing
Loss, which is comprised of the following partners: Great Opportunities,
Texas Diversity Council, DARS – Division for Rehabilitation Services, DARS
– Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, and U.S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission

Target audience: College/University Career Services, Disability Student
Services Offices and Businesses/Employers

Registration: Registration must be received by 2/17/2011. The Registration
fee includes lunch and materials. There will be NO on-site registrations or
