REMINDER: U.S. Access Board meeting – DFW

Reminder of U.S. Access Board meeting in Dallas September 12, 2011

Dear Colleague: As you know, on September 12th the U.S. Access Board will be
holding an all-day event in Dallas, Texas. The purpose of this email is to
remind you of what’s taking place that day and to encourage your
participation!

First, the Access Board will conduct a public hearing on the Notice of
Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on guidelines for public rights-of-way which were
published on July 26, 2011. These guidelines address access to sidewalks,
street crossings, and other components of pedestrian networks for people
with disabilities. Members of the public who are interested in providing
testimony at this hearing are strongly encouraged to contact me at:
[email protected] so that I can put your name on the witness list.

During the afternoon there will be two panels of experts. The first panel
will discuss the State certified code implementation process. Presenters
will include: Jonathan Hahm, with the U.S. Department of Justice; George
Ferrie, with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation; Rick Lee, AIA
with HKS, Inc.; and Phillip Pearce, Registered Accessibility Specialist and
former Access Board member. The second panel will feature Bill
Curtis-Davidson from IBM’s Human Ability & Accessibility Center who will
discuss issues surrounding making self-service transaction machines
accessible to persons with disabilities and will demonstrate IBM’s
accessible self-service travel kiosk.

After both of the panels have made their presentations, we will have an
“open microphone session” where we will invite the audience to make comments
and ask any questions they may have. The Access Board values these
out-of-town meetings because it affords our members the opportunity to
openly discuss issues and interact with citizens who are interested in the
Board’s work.

This meeting will take place on September 12, 2011 at the Sheraton Dallas on
400 North Olive Street in Dallas. All events are open to the public.
Registration is not required. The Board requests that all participants
refrain from wearing perfume, cologne and other fragrances, and use
unscented personal care products in order to promote a fragrance-free
environment. I’m also attaching a flyer that you may want to share with your
colleagues.

We’ll look forward to seeing you there!!

Best regards,

Kathy Roy Johnson
