Celebrate Deaf Legacy @ your library

With a tribute to Abbé Charles Michel de l’Épée, founder of the first school
for the deaf in the world and the inventor of sign language, on the 300th
anniversary of his birth this year in 2012. Born November 25, 1712 Died
December 23, 1789.

Presented by the Dallas Public Library, in partnerships with the Friends of
the Dallas Public Library, Inc, Deaf Action Center, Texas Association of the
Deaf and National Association of the Deaf

Guest speakers include: Alice L. Hagemeyer and Alec McFarlane, who are in
town for the American Library Association Midwinter meeting, Jan 20-24, and
Grant Laird, Jr, CEO, Deaf Network of Texas. Alice will present a special
tribute to Abbé Charles Michel de l’Épée. Alec’s topic will be Bridging Deaf
Cultures in Texas. For Grant, it will be “Deaf” Smith: Texas Deaf Folk Hero

Governor’s Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Maryland School for the
Deaf, Maryland Association of the Deaf and National Association of the Deaf

Guest speakers include: Molly Raphael. President, American Library
Association, Chad Baker, Museum Director at the Maryland School for the Deaf
and Jack R. Gannon, author of World Federation of the Deaf: A History.
Special tribute presented by Alice L. Hagemeyer and Alec McFarlane to Abbé
