My Father’s Gift: ASL Show by Wink – Austin

My Father’s Gift: ASL Show by Wink – Austin

What shapes our values? Who are our heroes? Journey through Wink’s
story and you may discover your own answers to these questions. Wink
takes you through decades of laughs, tribulations, and the uncertainty
that he experienced personally and vicariously through his mother and
father. Visit the scene of his mother’s train accident, pop back into
his kindergarten class, where as a CODA he had his first introduction
to the hearing world. Watch as his parents’ thoughts, stories and
experiences are shared with exciting twists and turns that give the
audience an inside look at growing up with Deaf parents.

Looking back, Wink realizes just how much they taught him about the
beauty and value of American Sign Language and Deaf Culture. But most
of all, this is a beautiful story of Wink’s parents, Windell and Gwen
Smith, their love for each other that was tested by a horrific car
accident, their community that they leaned on for support, and the core
beliefs and values that are rooted in Deaf Culture. All of these are
wrapped up in this entertaining story, so come join us as we look up at
Deaf Culture.

Growing up Wink has always seen his father and mother recount their
life story. Wink got to see firsthand ASL storytelling, living the
experiences and feeling the jolt from the twist and turns, even if it
was the hundredth time he seen the story. Seeing and feeling these ASL
stories had lead Wink to the creation of a live show in order to share
his parents beautiful story with the twist and turns he beheld growing
up in a Deaf home. Audiences get a taste of various emotions: laughter,
joy, sadness, hurt, frustration and uplifting moments that will leave
the audience with courage, interest and hopefully experiencing these
moments can put not only each audience member’s life in perspective but
also their view of the Deaf community and CODAs.
