Austin Tenants’ Council / Housing Discrimination Against the Deaf

The Austin Tenants’ Council has a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to do testing (“secret shopping”) when we receive complaints of housing discrimination.

Over the next year, we are doing a special testing project where we need deaf individuals and hearing individuals who can sign to volunteer as testers (“secret shoppers”). The deaf testers will contact an apartment complex using a relay service to test the customer service (Does the complex hang up when they hear it’s a relay call? Are they unwilling to answer questions using relay? Etc.).

To get involved, you must attend a 90-minute training at the ATC office (1640 East 2nd Street). We will have an interpreter at the training.

The training will be held in a few months.

To get involved, please contact Morgan Morrison at 512-474-7007 x 104 or [email protected]. For more info about our program, please visit http://www.housing-rights.org/volunteer.html.
