Associate Director

THE ORGANIZATION:

Telecommunications for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Inc. (TDI) is a consumer advocacy organization that provides leadership in achieving equal access to telecommunications, media, and information technologies for 48 million Americans who are deaf and hard of hearing. TDI publishes theTDI World quarterly magazine and the annual TDI National Directory & Resource Guide, also known as the Blue Book. In odd numbered years, TDI hosts a biennial conference where consumers, industry leaders and government officials gather to discuss accessibility trends in technology. THE OPPORTUNITY:

TDI is seeking a talented and versatile professional for the position of Associate Director. The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong, clear commitment to expanding and diversifying TDI’s revenue streams for its daily operations. Responsibilities include strategic plan implementation, operations planning and evaluation, project management, financial planning and monitoring, grant writing and fund-raising.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Associate Director provides resource development services, consultation, and other support services to the Executive Director for the operations and programs of TDI. The work performance of this position is crucial for the financial health of TDI in the coming years to ensure that it remains a very active national consumer advocacy organization in Washington, D.C. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Resource Development and Management:

* Increases the diversity and current funding sources and levels for TDI’s programs and services. Serves as the Association’s point person in preparing and submitting applications or proposals for new grant and contractual opportunities. Initiates and manages the Association’s other fund-raising projects as necessary.
* Assists the Executive Director in ensuring all of TDI’s programs and services are efficiently-operated and that revenue and expenses for all departments are recorded properly (under generally accepted accounting principles).
* Submits complete, accurate financial and program reports as required by federal, state, local and private funding sources.
* Performs other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.

Program Planning and Evaluation:

* Assists the Executive Director in the overall planning, organizing, direction, and evaluation of TDI and its programs, services, and activities.
* Prepares and submits timely administrative reports as required by the Executive Director.
* Conducts planning activities with staff and other stakeholders to receive input on the overall direction of TDI and to assess progress toward goals and objectives, identify needs, set priorities and develop strategies.
* Develops organizational infrastructure that will maximize the effectiveness of staff resources.
* Anticipates and plans for emerging needs of TDI.
* Reviews federal, state, and local laws and regulations to determine potential action to be taken by TDI.
* Proactively develops strategies to ensure TDI’s continued growth as an organization.

Operations Efficiency:

* Ensures that there is a progressive and productive work environment for TDI staff.
* Oversees procedures for selection and hiring of competent and qualified personnel.
* Creates job descriptions, job classifications and performance measures for all staff positions.
* Organizes personnel resources internally in a structure which effectively enables TDI to carry out its goals and objectives.

Community Relations:

* Coordinates efforts in creating an overall favorable image of TDI, its services and its role as a change agent at the national level to advance and protect the rights and privileges of deaf and hard of hearing individuals in America.
* Promotes and maintains effective working relationships with key officials and representatives in philanthropy, government, industry, and other consumer groups, and others involved in direct or indirect services to individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing.
* Works closely with the Director of Public Relations to develop an ongoing public information program through the media, newsletters, and other publications to apprise all interested parties of the services of TDI and the rights and privileges in telecommunications, media, and information services for deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* A Masters’ Degree of Arts/Science is preferred. However, the candidate must possess at least a Bachelors of Arts/Science Degree in Business, Education, Human Resources, Management, Public Administration, Human Services or other related field.

* Minimum of three years of job related work experience with demonstrated competence in the following areas: working with individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing, familiarity with the philanthropic process, budget development, program planning, grant writing, and non-profit or government management responsibility.

* Basic knowledge of disability and/or civil rights law and history.
* Proven successful experience in grant writing and project management
* Proven network of contacts and relationships with philanthropy professionals.

Past work experience should include successful:

* Advocacy skills at the individual and systemic levels; including state and federal issues.
* Budget creation and management.
* Direct responsibility for personnel and human resource management.
* Business management decisions based on fiscal realities and organizational missions and values.
* Analysis of political landscapes and programmatic trends.
* Interagency coordination/cooperation.
* Quality relations with the media.

Demonstrated skills must include:

* Excellent interpersonal and written communication.
* Building linkages to the legal, political, business, philanthropy, and disability communities.
* Successful strategies in solving problems and bringing together divergent agendas.
* Managing multiple funding sources and agendas.
* Planning long-term goals and implementing strategies to accomplish said goals.

Knowledge of:

* State, local and federal programs and services for people with disabilities and their families.
* Current trends in the field of disabilities and human services.
* Applicable rules, laws and regulations related to personnel and fiscal management of organizational resources.

Ability to:

* Communicate fluently in American Sign Language is preferred, but the willingness to learn and use it well within two years is mandatory. Have some familiarity with other communication modes that are commonly used by Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals.
* Serve as a team player for the staff, as well as to be a mentor for them. Assists the Executive

Director to provide work expectations for them.

* Willingness to work irregular and extended schedules.
* Willingness to travel throughout the United States.
* Self-starter, with proven ability to manage schedule and establish priorities that respond to the mission and the goals of TDI.

COMPENSATION:

TDI offers a competitive salary and customary benefits. The salary range for this position is $50,000-$60,000, depending on education and experience. TDI is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.
