In NEAT, the follow-up companion piece to the Jubilee Theatre smash hit Pretty Fire, Charlayne Woodard shares her memories of growing up black in America in the 1950’s and 60’s. Through the magic of storytelling, music and movement, Charlayne takes us on a journey from Savannah, Georgia to Albany, New York with engaging humor and sharp insight. Award winning actress and star of Jubilee Theatre’s Pretty Fire – Ebony Marshall-Oliver returns to the Jubilee stage, bringing to life more than 20 different characters and leaving you spellbound.
This autobiographical drama focuses on the life of Charlayne Woodard and her relationship with her aunt Beneatha, known as Neat. After a tragic childhood accident, Neat was rushed to the nearest emergency room only to be refused treatment. By the time her mother got her to the black hospital on the other side of town, she was permanently brain-damaged.
Woodard paints the story of her relationship with her child-like aunt, from her excitement of having a “grown-up” playmate to her embarrassment at some of Neat’s simple ways. She shares stories that are heartfelt, poignant and sidesplitting , interwoven with teen-age fashions, hairdos, pop music, family relations, friendship and religion.
The Director
Tre Garrett (Director) is a national award-winning theatre director and the current Artistic Director for Jubilee Theatre. A former Show Director for Walt Disney Entertainment and Director in Residence for the Kennedy Center, Tre has directed at theatres throughout the country. His past directorial credits with Jubilee Theatre include Pretty Fire, Top Dog / Under Dog, Broke-ology, Flight, Trav’lin – The 1930’s Harlem Musical and most recently Knock Me A Kiss.
The Cast
Ebony Marshall-Oliver was last seen in Jubilee Theatre’s production of Pretty Fire. Other Jubilee Theatre credits include Blues in the Night, Alice Wonder and A Raisin in the Sun. Assuming the same role of Charlayne Woodard in Pretty Fire, she returns to perform more than 20 characters in NEAT.
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Performances
By special arrangement, there will be two sign interpreted performances of NEAT on Saturday, November 9th at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 10th at 3:00 p.m.
Preview performances begin Friday, October 11. Opening night is Friday, October 18 and performances run through Sunday, November 10. Evening performances are at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Matinee performances are at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Ticket prices range from $12.00 – $25.00 and may be purchased online at http://www.jubileetheatre.org, in person at the theater Box Office, located at 506 Main Street or by calling 817-338-4411. Box Office hours of operation are Tuesday – Friday 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and one hour before each performance.
Jubilee Theatre, the Fort Worth / Dallas area’s only African-American theater producing a full season of shows, exists to create and present theatrical works that reflect the African-American experience.
