JMA Celebrates a successful year with our new Superintendant/Principal and a new look for our campus

Greeting Parents and Friends of Jean Massieu Academy!

I have travelled down varied paths as I confidently continue my journey towards exceptional educational leadership. My passion for learning encourages me to foster a love of learning in all young people. Not only has my passion led me into the educational arena, it has directed my course from Chicago, Illinois to Minneapolis, Minnesota and, now, Arlington, Texas. From attorney to classroom teacher to public charter school leader, I am confident that my professional successes have evolved into my life's purpose—working with JMA students. As such, it is my great honor and pleasure to be working collaboratively with all JMA parents and community members as we strive to exceed high expectations of personal and academic growth for all students.

On a personal note, I relocated to Texas in December of 2012. I currently reside with my husband of three years and my two favorite little dogs: Bonnie and Spike. My door is open and I encourage you to become an active part of our community. In the meantime, it is always a great idea to ask a JMA student what they learned today!

Sincerely,
Margaret R O’Brien

The JMA Mission Statement:

The mission of Jean Massieu Academy is to promote educational excellence for children, early childhood through 12th grade, using innovative teaching methods, utilizing American Sign Language as the instructional language with an emphasis on mastery of English in reading and writing. Interdisciplinary curriculum is presented in a way that is relevant to each student's world. Students will apply their knowledge of culture and language diversity and enter the global labor force of the 21st century with marketable skills.

Information

Jean Massieu Academy is an open enrollment public charter school that was opened in August 1999 to serve Deaf or Hard of Hearing students and their non-deaf siblings or peers as well as CODAs (children of Deaf adults). JMA is unique because we are a school of choice providing all instruction in American Sign Language (ASL). This creates an equal-access communication environment for our students and staff. At JMA, all staff and students, whether deaf or hearing, are encouraged to communicate freely using ASL and English. This bilingual environment removes communication barriers that typically exist for deaf and hard of hearing students within the traditional public school system. All of our teaching staff are Highly Qualified and we have had an Acceptable Yearly Progress Rating for the past five school years. The school is growing an academic program that has every student entitled to an Individual Learning Plan, ILP, meaning every student receives education tailored to his or her needs. JMA continues to support and develop our teachers through training relevant to students’ educational plans. Ms. O’Brien has introduced "The E's" to embrace the values of Engagement, Empowerment, and Excitement! One of the core values that our new superintendent/principal embraces is "empowering and engaging the parents." This will be a challenging task! JMA’s students come from all over the Dallas-Fort Worth area and from a wide range of cultures, languages, and backgrounds. This melting pot of variety adds a rare cultural richness to the JMA family that is enviable.

We invite you to come for a visit as we celebrate our Grand Celebration. We will have a reveal on October 26th, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. With a special Ribbon Cutting at 11:30 a.m. and school tours thereafter. We look forward to meeting you and sharing our excitement and pride in Jean Massieu Academy. Jean Massieu Academy is centrally located in Arlington in the DFW Metroplex. Fully enrolled, applications for new student wait lists are being accepted. Tuition is free at JMA and limited transportation is offered.
