DEAF ACTION CENTER announces new Board of Directors and Executive Committee

The best champion of an organization is its Board of Directors.

We are excited to announce our new Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

Dominic Lacy, President
Michael McLaurin, Treasurer
Jim Dowsett, Vice President
Sheri Christianson, Secretary

We want to express our sincere gratitude to Bob Blakeney who served as DAC’s President for a number of years. We look forward to his continued leadership as a member of our Board.

We welcome our new Board members Lisa Wyly and Holly Cates. They bring not only passion for our community, but much excitement and experience. A special thank you to Chris Cates and Thomas Means, who have rotated off the Board. They have served faithfully for the past few years, and we will always consider them part of our DAC family.

In my first edition of the President’s Corner, I am honored to be serving DAC as the new President of the Board of Directors. Having served on the Board for a number of years, I am humbled by the tireless dedication, commitment, and passion of our DAC staff.

If it wasn’t for them, North Texas would see a big gap in services for the Deaf and Hard of hearing in our community. In the DFW area alone, there are nearly half-million individuals who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing representing over 10% of the overall DFW population. The needs in our community are very real.

I look forward to working with our Board of Directors and our staff to ensure we are addressing the needs of our community. I am excited about things to come!

DEAF ACTION CENTER announces new Executive Director & Director of Operations/Services

We are excited to announce that Heather Hughes has accepted the position of Executive Director for Deaf Action Center and Susan Dibirdik is Director of Operations and Services.

Growing up, I had a vague sense of identity as a “Deaf woman”. Stereotypes and oppression from mainstream society did little to shape the person I was meant to be.

This journey was not taken alone, with the encouragement and support of the Deaf community, certain hard of hearing individuals, and Deaf Action Center (DAC), my venture into Deafhood – the beautiful and positive acceptance of being Deaf – was just the start of something amazing.

Now it is time for me to give back to the community that I love. 2014 will be a year of new challenges and great opportunities as we seek to expand our services. Our goal is to create a collective hub to educate and provide mentorship for DAC consumers. It will also function as a centralized location where those who want to become an ally and contributing member to the cause of equality in our lives.

It is with great honor and privilege to serve as the new Executive Director, and I invite you to join me in supporting the Deaf and hard of hearing to achieve their dreams, just as DAC supported me in mine. Thank you for this opportunity to serve you.
