Parent Guide and Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) Guide openings

The Texas Hands & Voices Guide By Your Side (GBYS) program currently has part time position openings for the following: one (1) D/HH Guide in the South Houston area, one (1) Parent Guide in the South Houston area and one (1) Bilingual Parent Guide in the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area and/or the Valley.

A Parent Guide must be a parent/guardian of a child who is deaf or hard of hearing. A D/HH Guide must be an adult who is d/Deaf or hard of hearing. The Guides will undergo specialized ongoing training in order to provide support to families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Guide By Your Side (GBYS) is a program of Texas Hands & Voices that provides support for parents of children who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf/blind, or deaf with additional disabilities. The goal of the program is to provide parents – with d/hh children ages birth to twenty-one – the opportunity to establish a supportive relationship with a trained and experienced fellow parent and/or a d/Deaf or hard of hearing adult.

* The Parent Guide contracts will be for an average of 20 hours per month
* The D/HH Guide contract will be for an average of 12 hours per month
* Work will start immediately.
* Pay rate is $15/hour
* Occasional travel required for training, outreach and events.

NOTE: Bilingual Parent Guides must also:

Possess a strong understanding of the unique issues faced by families where English is not the primary language of the home and assist the family through communication in their native language. This search is specifically for a Spanish Speaking Bilingual Parent of a child who is d/Deaf or hard of hearing.

Funding is currently available through August 2015. Continuation of Guide positions are dependent on renewal of grant.
