This workshop will cover the history and challenges faced by deaf felons in the prison system. In addition, the session will include procedural and communication barriers imposed on these inmates, language specific to the prison system, and legal and ethical issues will be discussed. As well, unique videos of inmates in the prison system, and their communication styles and needs, will be shared.

Presenter:
Jerry Lee has been a staff interpreter in the Criminal Justice System for over 30 years. She has worked with many deaf offenders who have a variety of signing styles, skills, and methods, from all ethnic and age groups. Jerry is a child of deaf parents and holds DARS DHHS Level III and Court Interpreter Certification.

DHHS .6 CEUs Approved.

Intended audience: All certified interpreters working, or interested in working, in legal/court settings. Registration confirmation will be emailed. Communication access services, and any other accommodation, must be requested by September 20, 2015.
