ADDRESS: 6201 BONHOMME ROAD, SUITE 150

CITY: HOUSTON, TX. 77036

INTERACTION BETWEEN A DEAF VEHICLE DRIVER BEING STOPPED BY A POLICE OFFICER IS SERIOUS AND OFTENTIMES CONFUSING. THERE WILL BE A WORKSHOP AT HOUSTON CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14th TO ALLOW THE DEAF COMMUNITY AND THE POLICE FORCE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER.

OFFICE JAMES SOBOTA WITH THE HOUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT WILL EXPLAIN WHAT THE TRAFFIC OFFICERS ARE BEING TAUGHT ABOUT HOW TO INTERACT AND RECOGNIZE THE DEAF. HE WILL BRING TO OUR ATTENTION THAT THERE IS A SPECIAL PLACARD THAT IS KEPT OUT OF SIGHT UNTIL NEEDED AND THIS PLACARD WILL HELP THE TRAFFIC OFFICER TO IMMEDIATELY KNOW THE DRIVER IS REALLY A DEAF PERSON IN NEED OF COMMUNICATING ACCOMMODATIONS.

WE WANT TO PREVENT ANY SITUATION FROM BECOMING DIFFICULT AND AVOID A POSSIBLE ARREST JUST BECAUSE OF A SIMPLE TRAFFIC INSTANCE. SO, PLEASE ATTEND THIS WORKSHOP AND LEARN HOW YOU CAN BE QUICKLY ON YOUR WAY AFTER BEING PULLED OVER BY A TRAFFIC OFFICER. BY KNOWING WHAT IS EXPECTED AND WHAT IS NECESSARY TO DO, YOU CAN BE ON YOUR WAY WITHIN MINUTES. SEE YOU THERE AT HCIL STARTING AT 10:30 AM.
