Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Deaf Studies, Deaf Education (DSDE) Department Chair, the Designated Interpreter (DI) provides American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting/sign language transliterating services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing DSDE faculty and staff. The primary purpose of the DI is facilitating, supporting, and maximizing the integration and inclusion of the DSDE Deaf and Hard of Hearing faculty and staff within the Lamar University community, and the greater national and international academic and research communities. As a staff member in the DSDE Department, the DI is expected to support the Department’s growth and advancement through positive and respectful interaction and relationship with University faculty, staff, and students, as well as individuals and entities outside the University. The DI accepts responsibility for knowledge of, and adherence to the ethics of interpreting and the role of the interpreter, with particular emphasis applied to the maintaining of confidentiality as the DI participates in university proceedings and proprietary research. Along with demonstrated fluency in English and American Sign Language, the job requires the ability to adapt within an evolving work environment, and the ability to provide interpreting services that accurately reflect the qualifications and expertise of the Department.
