Ruby Allen Kleberg, 95 years old, stepped from this life into the loving arms of Jesus on June 23, 2019. She died peacefully at Brookdale North Austin where she had been living for the last 18 months. She was born in Kensale, Virginia, a small fishing/farming community in the Northern Neck of Virginia on February 24, 1924 to Charles and Elsie Allen.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Kleberg; her parents, Charles and Elsie Allen; her brothers, William Allen, Harry Allen, Charles Allen, Sr.; and sister, Lola Musgrove.

Ruby is survived by her nieces and nephews, David Allen (Amy,) Elizabeth Allen Harp (Larry,) Theresa Musgrove Kramer, Shirley Musgrove Helfrich, Barbara Jean Allen, Patricia Allen, and Charles Allen, Jr; cousin, Becky Pimentel; and longtime friend, Kristina Shugart.

As a young girl, Ruby was sent to the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton VA. While there, she had the opportunity to meet and speak with Helen Keller. Ruby graduated from VSD in 1943. One summer, while visiting in Richmond, her cousin, Ruth, introduced her to Robert Kleberg, a recent graduate of Gallaudet University. He visited her every Sunday that summer finally asking for her hand in marriage. They were married the following summer in July of 1948. After living 2 years in Tucson, AZ and eleven years in Galveston, TX, they came to Austin, TX in 1961 and never left. They were married 41 years until his death in 1990. Ruby worked for the Texas Department of Human Services for 20 years, retiring in 1986.

Ruby loved spending time with her friends whether at church, senior citizens meetings, shopping, chatting in her apartment, or eating out at a favorite restaurant. She also enjoyed traveling having visited Hawaii (3 times,) Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean (3 times,) Germany, Italy, France and England. In recent years, she enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, which she had framed and then gave away.

Ruby was a giver, whether of her time, finances, gifts, or friendship. She will be missed by all who knew her.

My thanks to all the staff at Brookdale North Austin and Brookdale Hospice for the care and attention they gave our sweet Ruby.
