PRESS RELEASE

Where Hands Can Speak

The 30th Annual Weekend for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing April 3rd and 4th, 2020

Fort Worth, March 2, 2020: For the 30th year, Imagination Fort Worth is gearing up for their Weekend for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing event. Held the first weekend in April, about 400 Deaf & Hard of Hearing high school students and teachers will gather at Tarrant County College – Trinity River Campus to experience a weekend where they will be exposed to successful Deaf artists, fine arts workshops, and each other.

This weekend began three decades ago when a visionary Deaf teacher named Dianne Fisher wanted to bring the National Theatre for the Deaf’s performance of Treasure Island to her students in Fort Worth. What started as a single performance has evolved into a weekend of activities designed specifically for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, including a dance.

“This program gives my students the opportunity to see what a successful Deaf adult looks like and be inspired by their stories,” says a participating teacher. The kids get to be around other kids just like them, going through the same thing as them. This weekend gives them a space where they are just like everyone else, where they can be themselves.

Imagination Fort Worth is proud to host this event each year and thank Arts Council of Fort Worth and Tarrant County, Fort Worth Tourism Public Improvement District, Frost Bank, TCC – Trinity River Campus, TCU, Texas Commission on the Arts, Texas Education Agency, and all the partners that help make this event possible.
