Webinar for Deaf and Hard of Hearing:
Communication Access Tips During the Pandemic

Face masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) can cause communication issues for everyone, across both spoken and signed languages. How are they a communication barrier?

• In American Sign Language (ASL), facial expressions are so critical, they can affect the meaning of a sign. Face masks block facial features and expressions, including a smile and a frown.
• Face masks also block necessary lipreading or visual cues
• They can muffle and distort audible speech.
