CSD Awarded Grant From San Antonio Area Foundation

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — CSD of San Antonio has been awarded a grant from the Semp Russ Foundation and Lila G. and Vesey F. Taylor Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation. This grant will help CSD provide a language accessible curriculum and culturally competent specialized health education class delivery system for the deaf and hard of hearing community in San Antonio.

CSD is the nation’s largest deaf and hard of hearing human service organization and also, in a partnership with Sprint Nextel, operates the nation’s largest traditional relay service network.

This grant, which covers one year, enables CSD of San Antonio to provide educational activities that will include visual and hands-on activities that will not only provide information, but also support clear communication and model healthy lifestyle habits. Communicating in a consumer’s native language — in this case American Sign Language — will lead to access to viable information for the deaf and hard of hearing community, empowering them to make well-informed decisions regarding their health.

“We would like to thank the San Antonio Area Foundation for their dedication to the deaf and hard of hearing San Antonio community,” said Ben Soukup, CSD chief executive officer. “This grant will help us eliminate barriers the deaf and hard of hearing community face when they need access to crucial information, and it empowers CSD to meet a critical community need.”

Further inquires about outreach and prevention services to the deaf and hard of hearing community may be directed to Kent Kennedy, CSD Texas director, via e-mail at [email protected]. Kennedy can also be reached by phone, voice/TTY at (210) 349-3332, or by fax at (210) 349-3272.
