TCD – April 2007 Newsletter

Texoma Council for the Deaf
Sherman/Denison, Texas
April 2007

Our officers just started working on the new logo. We asked the officers, members, and non-members, to pick one of 6 designs to be the logo that would fit our current TCD. We have used our original logo since 1976 so it’s time for us to change, because there are many new faces, new officers, and a new world for TCD. Many designs were brought to the meeting and we held a vote to pick one design. We are very excited that we are getting the new logo very soon. The new logo will be announced on the website and will be available on T-shirts, too.

As previously reported, officers, and members are working on the new website. We are having the meeting to discuss how we can update information on the website. It will take hours of hard work to share the feeback and create the TCD website very soon.

After we are done with the logo and website, we will begin work on the next step of updating the BY-LAWS and CONSTITUTION, since no updates or changes have been done since 1976. I searched for any previous changes in the By-Laws but none were found. Our officers and members decided it is time to make changes to improve the By-Laws and Constitution to provide better service for TCD in the future.

Our officers meet together before the General Board Meeting to focus on specific issues due too many long hours also spend in General Board Meetings. The officers have many ideas for activities for this year and next year. We can prepare ahead of time for events. Officers can then bring the issue to the General Board Meeting to share or get ideas and get feedback. This would be good teamwork and would be a great help.

We are very busy preparing our Summer Deaf Picnic for June 16th. We will send out the flyers to the DEAF NETWORK so be sure you check out the DEAF NETWORK for the TCD Summner Deaf Picnic flyer very soon. Everyone is welcome to come and support our TCD fund for the future. The Summer Deaf Picnic will be held at Waterloo Park in Denison in June. We are very excited and hope to meet many new faces at the picnic. We will also have the new logo on T-shirts at the picnic to purchase. If anyone is interested in purchasing the T-shirt ahead of time, email Lisa Wynn at [email protected] . We hope to post the logo on the website for your view website is under construction.

Last Year, the former officers had a discussion that they would like to ask the police officer to come and give a lecture about cooperation they provide hearing-impaired residents in our counties. One of the Members had a very good point in saying that we never know if any deaf residents have had complaints about how police do their jobs. They suggested talking to the mayor of sheriff in Denison. Nancy-Truitt, a former employee from Texoma Council for the Government, asked a hearing-impaired person from TCD to talk to Heather Bise from dars-Department of Assistive Rehabilitative Services. They tried to call Heather to set it up in Sherman, Texas but became busy and did not have time to call Heather about it again. Lisa Wynn decided to take care of it and finally contacted Heather. Lisa and Heather discussed guidelines for 2007. The reason why Lisa Wynn wants that information is because of learning Law Enforcement Guidelines.

We had Sherman Police Crime Prevention Unit at Sherman Library on March 31 recently. Lisa Wynn wanted to share about this that we are very pleased with Heather Bise for getting police officers to come and lecture us about what we learned, what we are supposed to do and what police duties are. We enjoyed listening and questioning them. Scot and LIsa would like to talk to Heather Bise to have Sherman Police come every month to discuss more issued such as house safety, tornado warnings, defending yourself, etc. Lisa Wynn is very pleased with SGT police officer that he was very nice, friendly officer, and great lecturer. He presented about Law Enforcement Guidelines of Deaf Citizens of Grayson County to learn how police are trained to act in various situations, what to do when involved in various police-related sitatuations, routine police behaviors that could possibly be misunderstood, and how police and people who are deaf or hard of hearing can better relate to one another.

As President, I would like share with you that Scott Randolph, Shelia Bills, and Lisa Wynn worked very hard with the Quality Inn HOtel’s Assistant Manager and Ceo Director about the deaf club. The CEO Director is very interested in allowing our TCD to use a room for Deaf Club events such as Christmas Party, Social Night, or any other parties. We will send out the flyers in DEAF NETWORK about the activities and events in the future. We were planning to have SOcial Night this April, but the Quality Inn did not received their liquor License yet so we postponed our Social Night Grand Opening until May 2007. Keep your fingers crossed.

Lisa and Scott already discussed the big event for next year in 2008. We hope that everyone in the United States and other countries can come and join us for this big event. We will not annouce it yet because we are still working on it. We will let you know more information after we get confirmation. Right now it;s unofficial because we need to make sure that everything is in the control. Lisa Wynn believes in Scott because he is faithful and positive about this big event.

We will have Car Wash on Saturday, May 5th, from 9am to 3 pm. in Sherman, Texas, at the Long John Silver’s on Highway 91. TCD members hope that everyone will come and bring their vehicles to be washed at our fundraiser to support TCD. In case of rain, the event will be cancelled until further notice at the same time and same location. The location is at Long John Silver’s , 1828 Texoma Parkway, Sherman, Texas 75090

We will have out SOCIAL NIGHT GRAND OPENING at the Quality Inn in Sherman on May 12 at 7pm. We will advertise our Grand Opening Flyer in Deaf Network. Please keep your eyes open for our flyer in deaf network asap.

We will have more newsletter in May. We have a lot of activities to work on for the Summer Deaf Picnic and Issues.
