Deaf Children in Nigeria
Last summer I had the opportunity to visit in Nigeria with members of my
church and others. While there, I visited the Kwara School for Special
Needs which is a residential school for blind, deaf and mentally handicapped
children. I immediately fell in love with the deaf children that I met and
saw the tremendous need for helpers/ teachers even for a few weeks for the
many deaf kids there. I don’t know how many, but there were far too many to
only have two teachers for all of them. I also noticed that they did not
have one book or any school supplies that the kids in the US take for
granted. I have contacted publishing companies for the blind and they have
sent quite a few books for the blind kids and I am collecting and buying
books for the deaf kids now.
I am looking for a few people who are qualified and able to go back with me
this summer for approximately 3 weeks to help the teachers there. I am a
certified teacher of special ed in Texas and have tutored deaf students at
CSUN and have been an interpreter aide at the Regional Day School in Irving.
If anyone would be interested in collecting or giving books for these kids
who range in age from 5 – 20 years please let me know. If anyone would
consider going please also let me know. Thank you.
This would be a great idea you are a Christian and would be interested in
going this next summer with me to work with the kids that they can email me
and we can discuss it. They would have to provide their expenses through
raising support from their churches, friends and family. Thank you and I
know the kids in Nigeria will be excited to know that other deaf people in
the US were interested in them.
