The Deaf Women’s Leadership Seminar is offered for one professional studies credit. This training provides deaf women with an invigorating environment for self-awareness, exploration, actualization, and leadership development. Training modules are offered by nationally recognized deaf female leaders who engage the participants in learning how to effectively advocate for their causes and develop the skills necessary to achieve results. Topics include self-awareness, leadership styles, communication, conflict resolution, and more!

* Knowledge of own leadership style and variables for maximizing leadership impact
* Professional communication and conflict resolution skills
* Participation in discussion on a new leadership training for young deaf women

Melissa Draganac-Hawk is a first-generation American of deaf immigrant Peruvian parents. She has more than 15 years of leadership experience within the deaf community. For nearly a decade, she was heavily involved with Deaf Women United (DWU), serving as a board member of DWU from 2003 to 2007 and as the organization’s executive director from 2007 to 2009. Currently, she is the president of the National Council of Hispano Deaf and Hard of Hearing and vice president of the National Association of the Deaf.

Storyteller Evon Black is nationally acclaimed performer, workshop leader, keynote presenter, and motivational speaker. Her infectious enthusiasm and dynamic energy revitalizes audiences and empowers participats everywhere. She graduated with a B.A. in psychology and an M.A. in Educational Technology from Gallaudet University. She began performing in 1986, using her storytelling to elevate audience’s understanding and acceptance of other cultures. Ms. Black has also worked for more than 22 years in the area of deaf student development. She is currently the Statewide Coordinator of Technology Services for Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind Services under the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services.

Tuition: $283 plus $30 processing fee; financial assistance is available tuition, travel, and lodging.

Applicant Selection Criteria:
Two participants will be recruited from each state in the region (Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Utah). Texas will recruit additional participants from the following cities: Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Houston and San Antonio
