“Spoken Nerd: An Incomplete History of Nerd Poetry,” by Mike Henry

ND nerd-in-chief and O.G. poetry slam kingpin Mike Henry will give a short presentation on the subbiest of poetical sub-genres, then host a showcase slamdown of Austin’s finest word nerds: Shappy Seasholz, Krissi Reeves, and Mike Whalen.

Poet Bios:

Shappy Seasholtz was the surly barkeep at the Bowery Poetry Club in NYC for its first eight years and slam-master of their poetry slam, NYC-Urbana. He has toured with Lollapalooza, was featured on HBO’S Def Poetry and has been running the National Nerd Slam for over a decade. He has a book with PENMANSHIP BOOKS called SPOKEN NERD REVOLUTION. His cartoons appear every Monday and Wednesday at http://www.dailydot.com.

After competing on his first poetry slam team in 2005, Mike Whalen went on to coach several other teams in Austin. His most recent big accomplishment is sorting and filing all 27 of his long boxes.

Krissi Reeves is a writer, performer and club owner who you may recognize as your oft-seen bartender at Nerd Nite. She has been fashioning her career as a solo performance artist, bringing to life humor-based creative nonfiction. Along the way, Krissi developed a curious obsession with neuropsychology, and from time to time performs wearing a safety helmet.

Mike Henry spent 15 years as emcee, curator, and Jedi Master for Austin Poetry Slam, which included bringing the National Poetry Slam to Austin three times, selling out the Paramount Theater in the process. He is co-owner and Talent Buyer at ND. Among his greatest frustrations in life is the fact that his repeated applications to appear as a contestant on Rock and Roll Jeopardy were ignored, because he would have whooped some butt on that show.

Plus! Look for guest cameos by the evening’s other presenters.
