Disaster Preparedness: Knowing Your Rights and Communication Needs – Austin, Texas

You and your family could be anywhere when disaster strikes – at work, at school or in the car. Emergencies and disasters can strike quickly and without warning and can force you to evacuate (leave) and go to a shelter. What would you do if you could not be able to absorb (not able to understand because of no interpreters or captioning) what the local officials say in regards to the emergency and/or disaster?

Becoming aware of your rights and communication needs as well as available resources is part of preparing in advance. Come to our training, and it also would empower you to learn how to self-advocate as a deaf/hard of hearing individual as preparing the emergencies and/or disaster in advance. The training is scheduled and located at:

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

6:00pm to 8:00pm

CAAG office at 1016 La Posada Drive, Suite 142 (by the front entrance)

Austin, TX 78752

Brian Determan, an ASL-native deaf individual, serves as the Deafness Resource Specialist 7A, through Communication Axess Ability Group, for a program funded by Texas DARS (Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services) – Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services. He works with various agencies and service providers regarding their access obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act. His training will empower deaf or hard of hearing individuals with knowledge of their civil rights and how to self-advocate.

Accommodations for participants such as real time captioning (C.A.R.T.) or sign to voice interpreter services must be requested by Thursday, January 24, 2013 by 5:00pm. Email to: [email protected] or call the office at VP/Direct 512-481-7707.
