As defined by the National Institutes of Health, culture is often described as the combination of a body of knowledge, a body of belief and a body of behavior. It involves a number of elements, including personal identification, language, thoughts, communications, actions, customs, beliefs, values, and institutions that are often specific to ethnic, racial, religious, geographic, or social groups. Cultural competence refers to an ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds, an important skill for individuals working in state government. To assist in your service to individuals who are deaf, this session will delve into American Deaf Culture which centers around language and identity, values, rules, and traditions.
