Overview
While coping with a shortage of work, interpreters are also attempting to navigate various financial relief options covered in the new Coranavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act).
Objectives
- Calculate stimulus checks
- Identify 2 types of COVID-19 small business loans
- Identify 3 different types of unemployment programs for Freelance workers
- State at least 2 options provided by IRS to assist those who can’t pay federal taxes on time

This workshop, participants will gain insight on the CARES Act and how it applies to interpreters from a tax perspective. Resources will be shared to guide future research on participant’s unique circumstances.

Rosemary Bocian, MA, EA, NIC, has been a certified ASL freelance interpreter for 7 years. In 2017 she co-authored the book “The Interpreter’s Quick Guide to Self-Employment” which is currently being used by Interpreter Training Programs nationwide and sold on Amazon. In order to better serve the interpreting community, she also decided to become an Enrolled Agent admitted to practice before the IRS with tax filing services. Rosemary received both her Bachelor’s in ASL Interpretation and Master’s in Deaf Studies: Culture from Gallaudet University. As an Enrolled Agent, author and seasoned speaker, Rosemary presents the complex world of self-employment in plain language so that interpreters can thrive in the profession.
