CSD was originally awarded the grant in 2006, and will continue to provide its domestic violence program due to the renewal of this grant.

Through the support of the State of Oklahoma District Attorneys Council and the Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, as well as the deaf community, CSD will continue the provision of these services. The domestic violence program is led by Kristina Hakey, CSD community specialist. Hakey will resume work with the deaf and hard of hearing community, domestic violence/sexual assault service providers, law enforcement, as well as medical, legal and other providers.

The grant began Jan. 1 and will continue to include these three main areas:

* Continued work towards strengthening the domestic violence provider infrastructure — law enforcement, service providers, shelters, judicial system, social service agencies- competencies for responding effectively to incidents of violence towards deaf and hard of hearing women.

* Continued work with the deaf and hard of hearing statewide communities to promote knowledge of domestic violence issues; resources to prevent and reduce incidents; and taboos about domestic violence in the deaf and hard of hearing community.

* Continuing to operate the TTY and Video Domestic Violence Information Line through the support of the community of volunteers.

“A primary focus of the S.T.O.P. Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program is to ensure funding is provided to underserved populations,” said DeLynn Fudge, director, Federal Grant Division, Oklahoma District Attorneys Council. “We are lucky that CSD is providing domestic violence services to the deaf and hard of hearing. It is imperative that the courts, attorneys, law enforcement, and victim service providers are knowledgeable and aware of how to assist victims of domestic violence that are also deaf and hard of hearing. Without the assistance of CSD, this population would not be effectively served.”

The partnership with statewide entities and statewide deaf organizations will cover all of Oklahoma.

“We’d like to thank the Oklahoma District Attorneys Council for its commitment to stopping domestic violence in the deaf community,” said Benjamin Soukup, CSD chief executive officer. “Violence against women doesn’t just permeate hearing culture — abuse happens in all cultures. With this recommitment, we stand ready to be a resource for all of our constituents in Oklahoma.”

For more information on CSD of Oklahoma, contact Glenna Cooper, division director, via telephone at (800) 697-9445, by fax at (918) 835-6459, by video phone at gcooper.csd.tv or via e-mail at gcooper@c-s-d.org.

About CSD – CSD (aka Communication Service for the Deaf, Inc.) was established in 1975, primarily to provide sign language interpreting services to deaf and hard of hearing adults in South Dakota. Today, CSD employs over 3,000 individuals in offices across the nation, providing a broad continuum of social and human services programs, as well as telecommunications relay services. CSD is a private nonprofit agency dedicated to providing quality services; ensuring public accessibility; and increasing awareness of issues affecting the deaf, hard of hearing and individuals with speech disabilities.
