Texans with disabilities<br \/>\nshould begin preparing for hurricanes and other natural disasters that may<br \/>\nstrike with very little warning. People with disabilities, their families<br \/>\nand attendants must consider matters of mobility, transportation, and<br \/>\nelectric\/ electronic assistive devices and service animals that may make<br \/>\nevacuation more difficult.<\/p>\n<p>DARS urges our consumers to pre-register for transportation assistance with<br \/>\nthe Texas 2-1-1 Information and Referral Network and inform your family,<br \/>\nfriends and neighbors in advance that you might need their assistance<br \/>\nthroughout the hurricane season.<\/p>\n<p>For preparation tips, please visit the Texas Division of Emergency<br \/>\nManagement web site at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.txdps.state.tx.us\/dem\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.txdps.state.tx.us\/dem<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Department of State Health Services developed the Ready or Not Have a<br \/>\nPlan web site, It is an interactive Web site that promotes preparedness in<br \/>\nTexas; please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.texasprepares.org\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.texasprepares.org<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Additional helpful information is also available at<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.Ready.gov\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.Ready.gov<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.redcross.org<\/a><\/p>\n<p>GETTING TO KNOW 2-1-1<\/p>\n<p>DESCRIPTION:<br \/>\n2-1-1 provides a voluntary registry for people who need assistance and<br \/>\nevacuation in the case of an approaching hurricane. The public may register<br \/>\nyear-round.<\/p>\n<p>ELIGIBILITY:<br \/>\nEligible registrants:<\/p>\n<p>You have a disability or special health care need and require assistance to<br \/>\nevacuate.<br \/>\nYou cannot drive and cannot arrange transportation.<br \/>\nYou do not have a vehicle and you have no one else to help you evacuate.<br \/>\nINTAKE PROCEDURE:<br \/>\nCall 2-1-1 and select Option 4 to register or ask questions<\/p>\n<p>Relay Users should call 1-877-541-7905<\/p>\n<p>Registry information will be forwarded to local Offices of Emergency<br \/>\nManagement OEMs. Local OEMs have the responsibility for evacuations.<\/p>\n<p>DEADLINE TO REGISTER:<br \/>\n2-1-1 will stop entering people into the Registry 3 days (72 hours) before<br \/>\ntropical storm force winds are projected to make landfall. If you register<br \/>\nafter this time, 2-1-1 will refer you to local OEMs for registration.<\/p>\n<p>OTHER INFORMATION:<br \/>\nOnce registered, caller information is not removed from the database. There<br \/>\nis no need to call and verify registration. People who registered last year<br \/>\nmay re-register again this year if their information has changed.<\/p>\n<p>Service pets will not be separated from their owners while in transit or at<br \/>\nthe shelter. Non-service pets may be crated during transit and may be kept<br \/>\nin separate facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Emergencies and disasters can happen any time. Keep emergency supplies on<br \/>\nhand in your home, office, and car \u2013 especially during hurricane season.<br \/>\nYou\u2019ll need non-perishable food, water and batteries. You\u2019ll also need cash,<br \/>\ncredit cards, copies of medical prescriptions and insurance documents.<br \/>\nDon\u2019t forget products for babies, the elderly and special health care needs.<br \/>\nWhen local officials call for a mandatory evacuation, top off your gas tank<br \/>\nbefore you get on the road.<\/p>\n<p>When a storm is anywhere in the Gulf of Mexico, be prepared to evacuate.<br \/>\nMake your evacuation plans now \u2013 before a storm \u2013 and get your emergency<br \/>\nsupplies together now \u2013 before a storm.<\/p>\n<p>LEAVE EARLY IF YOU HAVE SPECIAL HEALTH CARE NEEDS<br \/>\nWhen a hurricane threatens, be prepared. It will take much longer to travel<br \/>\nduring a mandatory evacuation. If you\u2019ve got special health care needs \u2013 and<br \/>\ncan travel on your own \u2013 it is a good idea to leave ahead of the crowd. Make<br \/>\nyour evacuation plans in advance, Bring medical supplies along with your<br \/>\nemergency kit. In minutes after receiving<br \/>\nauthorized emergency information, Deaf Link produces an &#8220;air ready&#8221; alert<br \/>\nfor broadcast by cable or television stations in sign language, voice and<br \/>\ntext.<\/p>\n<p>Deaf Link is continuing to gather email addresses, state and zip code<br \/>\ninformation for the Accessible Hazard Alert System &#8211; Individual<br \/>\nNotification. The emergency notification can be sent to email, pagers, cell<br \/>\nphones (with text capability), and PDAs (with email capability). This<br \/>\nservice can provide users with access to emergency information for their<br \/>\nrespective county, city or state. The AHAS-IN (individual notification) can<br \/>\nbe received in American Sign Language (ASL), English text, voice and can<br \/>\nalso be received by Braille capable devices for blind or deaf and blind<br \/>\ncitizens.<\/p>\n<p>This alert system is in addition to alerts on television and any other<br \/>\nhazard information you have access to.
