Tutors Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students using<br \/>\nASL in area of specialization: Developmental and College Level English.<br \/>\nIncluding, but not limited to English as a Second Language, English<br \/>\nComprehension, Composition and Literature.<\/p>\n<p>REPORTS TO Manager, Learning Lab<\/p>\n<p>DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND TASKS<\/p>\n<p>Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties<br \/>\nmay be assigned.<\/p>\n<p>1. Tutors individuals or groups of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students using<br \/>\nAmerican Sign Language (ASL) in area of specialization, all aspects of<br \/>\nEnglish comprehension and composition, including college study skills.<br \/>\n2. Organizes and leads study groups for subjects in high demand; organizes<br \/>\ntextbooks and\/or supplemental learning materials as required.<br \/>\n3. Assists in promoting maximum use of the Learning Lab resources and<br \/>\ncomputer lab, including conducting classroom visits and communicating with<br \/>\nfaculty.<br \/>\n4. Researches resources used for implementing tutorial activities.<br \/>\n5. Provides feedback to faculty, Student Services and Office of Students<br \/>\nwith Disabilities as appropriate, regarding student performance and progress<br \/>\nas well as reporting on professional goals, performance and progress.<br \/>\n6. Assists in developing and implementing tutor training in area of<br \/>\nspecialization; coordinates peer tutors in designated subject area.<br \/>\n7. Provides assistance with developing, delivering and evaluating programs<br \/>\nand services in area of specialization.<\/p>\n<p>KNOWLEDGE<\/p>\n<p>Must possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with<br \/>\nor without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the<br \/>\njob can be performed.<\/p>\n<p>Required<\/p>\n<p>* Individual and group tutoring techniques and standards for tutoring<br \/>\ndevelopmental and college level English.<br \/>\n* Learning Lab services.<br \/>\n* Processes for organizing and leading study groups.<br \/>\n* Current supplemental learning materials including software, tutorials and<br \/>\ninternet resources as well as traditional resources.<br \/>\n* Knowledge of MLA style guide.<br \/>\n* Understanding of current English as a Second Language methodologies for<br \/>\nDeaf and Hard-of-Hearing students.<\/p>\n<p>Preferred<\/p>\n<p>* Knowledge of American Sign Language grammar, comprehension, and<br \/>\ncomposition.<\/p>\n<p>SKILLS<\/p>\n<p>Must possess required skills and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or<br \/>\nwithout reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job<br \/>\ncan be performed.<\/p>\n<p>Required<\/p>\n<p>* Maintaining an established work schedule.<br \/>\n* Advanced fluency in American Sign Language and the ability to understand<br \/>\nnative ASL signers.<br \/>\n* Effectively use interpersonal and communications skills, with tact and<br \/>\ndiplomacy, to maintain a professional and productive environment.<br \/>\n* Effectively use organizational, planning, and time management skills with<br \/>\nattention to detail and ability to follow through.<br \/>\n* Providing quality tutorial services to groups and individuals.<br \/>\n* Leading and organizing study groups.<br \/>\n* Promoting Learning Lab services.<br \/>\n* Providing feedback regarding student performance and\/or progress.<\/p>\n<p>COMPUTER SKILLS<\/p>\n<p>Required<\/p>\n<p>* Demonstrated proficiency using standard office software applications.<br \/>\n* Ability to learn college educational software &amp; tutorials, and be able to<br \/>\nprovide technical support for students in area of specialization, i.e. video<br \/>\ncapture software and techniques used for recording ASL compositions.<\/p>\n<p>PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS<\/p>\n<p>* Occasional lifting of objects up to 20 pounds.<br \/>\n* Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling,<br \/>\npushing and pulling.<br \/>\n* Work is performed in an office environment.<\/p>\n<p>WORK EXPERIENCE<\/p>\n<p>Required<\/p>\n<p>* Two years related work experience.<br \/>\n* Experience working in a deaf educational setting where English is taught<br \/>\nusing American Sign Language.<\/p>\n<p>Preferred<\/p>\n<p>* Experience teaching or tutoring English using American Sign Language.<br \/>\n* One year experience in post-secondary deaf education.<\/p>\n<p>EDUCATION<\/p>\n<p>Required<\/p>\n<p>* Bachelor&#8217;s degree in Education, Deaf Education or discipline related to<br \/>\ntutoring subject.<br \/>\nPreferred<br \/>\n* Master&#8217;s degree in a field related to Education\/Deaf Education or relating<br \/>\nto area of tutoring specialization<\/p>\n<p>OTHER<\/p>\n<p>Required<\/p>\n<p>* Recent experience or practice working with subject material from area of<br \/>\nspecialization.<\/p>\n<p>SAFETY<\/p>\n<p>* Work safely and follow safety rules. Report unsafe working conditions and<br \/>\nbehavior.
