{"id":11255,"date":"2010-07-31T21:09:13","date_gmt":"2010-08-01T02:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=11255"},"modified":"2011-01-13T15:19:39","modified_gmt":"2011-01-13T20:19:39","slug":"mattie-ford-august-longtime-teacher-dies-at-75","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2010\/07\/31\/mattie-ford-august-longtime-teacher-dies-at-75\/","title":{"rendered":"Mattie Ford August, longtime teacher, dies at 75"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Mattie Ford August, longtime teacher, dies at 75<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>July 28, 2010<\/p>\n<p>By JOE SIMNACHER \/ The Dallas Morning News<\/p>\n<p>jsimnacher@dallasnews.com<\/p>\n<p>Mattie Ford August had a special quality for giving nursing care, and she<br \/>\nused those skills to help students and children with hearing disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>She taught at state schools in Arkansas, Kansas and Texas before beginning<br \/>\nher 23-year career working with deaf students in the Dallas Independent<br \/>\nSchool District.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. August, 75, died July 21 of complications of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease at<br \/>\nBaylor University Medical Center in Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>Services will be at 11 a.m. today at New Hope Baptist Church in Dallas,<br \/>\nwhere she was an active member. Graveside services will be at Restland<br \/>\nMemorial Park.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. August had a passion for children since she was a nursing student on a<br \/>\nfive-year work-study program at the Tuskegee Institute, now Tuskegee<br \/>\nUniversity, said her husband, Taylor August of Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She worked on the children&#8217;s ward, so she had &#8230; affection for children<br \/>\n&#8230; particularly with children with disabilities,&#8221; Mr. August said.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. August&#8217;s nursing talents were &#8220;part of her calling,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It was<br \/>\nalso manifested through our children and grandchildren. She was one of the<br \/>\nmost selfless people that I&#8217;ve known.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. August was born in Whiteville, N.C., where she graduated from high<br \/>\nschool. She attended the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and Philander-Smith<br \/>\nCollege in Little Rock , Ark., before she received her bachelor&#8217;s degree<br \/>\nfrom the University of Arkansas. She later earned a master&#8217;s degree from the<br \/>\nUniversity of Kansas.<\/p>\n<p>She taught blind and deaf students at state schools \u2013 moving with her<br \/>\nhusband as he was transferred to positions with the U.S. Department of<br \/>\nEducation. In 1966, they moved to Austin. She taught at the Texas State<br \/>\nSchool for the Deaf until moving in 1971 to Dallas, where she worked for<br \/>\nthree years the Callier Hearing and Speech Center.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. August next taught at a state school in Olathe, Kan., before she and<br \/>\nher husband returned to Dallas in 1979.<\/p>\n<p>Back in Dallas, she taught deaf students at Samuell High School and became a<br \/>\ndistrict parent adviser with the Callier center, now Callier Center at<br \/>\nUT-Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She worked with deaf and hard-of-hearing infants,&#8221; her husband said.<br \/>\nFederal law requires school districts to identify infants with disabilities<br \/>\nand help the parents prepare for their education, Mr. August said.<\/p>\n<p>She retired from DISD in 2002. Mrs. August was a member of Delta Sigma Theta<br \/>\nsorority, the Dallas chapter of Links Inc. and Circle-Lets Inc.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her husband, Mrs. August is survived by two sons, Taylor D.<br \/>\nAugust II of Winterville, N.C., and Wilbert E.
