Texas School for the Deaf prepares for homecoming game<\/strong><\/p>\n

High school football teams are all hoping for a win this week. It is an
\nespecially important game week for the Texas School for the Deaf.<\/p>\n

Hands are clapping, mouths screaming, feet pounding as the Ranger
\ncheerleaders and mascot make a lap around the gym floor. It’s the homecoming
\npep rally.<\/p>\n

It seems like any other high school until the cheerleaders start to chant.
\nInstead of yelling, they sign the words to a pounding drum. It’s the
\nheartbeat of the Texas School for the Deaf.<\/p>\n

“Almost all deaf have 50 to 100 decibel hearing loss and so the drum
\nactually allows everyone to feel it and be on the same hearing level even
\nwith your hearing loss,\u201d TSD high school teacher Larry Smith said.<\/p>\n

“You can feel it through your bones,\u201d football player Dalton Etkie said of
\nthe drum.<\/p>\n

The noise is enough to rival any mainstream school.<\/p>\n

“A normal school is kind of boring for a pep rally. Here, we’re like, ‘Come
\non, let’s have some spirit,’\u201d freshman Emma Crawford said.<\/p>\n

The school has one pep rally a year, so it’s a big deal for the students.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe dress in blue and white, in our school colors, and, you know, we spray
\nour hair blue and white, put on as much makeup as we can,\u201d Crawford said.<\/p>\n

Saturday the football team takes on the Orioles of the Indiana School for
\nthe Deaf. Smith, who happens to be a former Ranger football player, says the
\nschool has never in its 154 year history lost to Indiana.<\/p>\n

“Texas has to win. We have to keep that tradition going, and everyone knows
\nthat Texas is a football state,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n

You have a personal invitation from the quarterback to watch from the
\nstands.<\/p>\n

“It will be a really exciting game. We can show everybody that deaf people
\ncan play sports like hearing people,\u201d Etkie said.<\/p>\n

Kickoff at Gamblin Field is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n
