Provides sign language interpreting services, including assignments for
\ndepartments, court hearings, small and large group situation, Commissioners
\nCourt, formal, highly technical situations.<\/p>\n

Duties and Responsibilities:<\/p>\n

Provides sign language interpreting services, which may include assignments
\nfor, but not limited to, consumers,staff, one-on-one appointments, small or
\nlarge group meetings, and telephone calls. Documents court and other legal
\nsituations (probation, jail, counseling, Commissioners Court, televised
\nmeetings) and other highly technical and complicated meetings and hearings.
\nProvides advocacy services regarding access by people who are deaf according
\nto applicable Federal, State and Local laws. Conducts outreach and education
\nto members of the community, staff, other departments, and the general
\npublic. Provides back-up assistance in scheduling\/coordinating interpreter
\nservices and other office duties,as required. Mentors other team
\ninterpreters.

Minimum Requirements:<\/p>\n

Education and Experience:<\/p>\n

Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education, Interpreting, Linguistics,
\nCommunications, Liberal Arts, Social or Behavioral Sciences or a directly
\nrelated field AND five (5) years interpreting services experience in a
\nvariety of community, health, governmental, and social situations, including
\nhighly technical or legal situations. Must have at least an additional three
\n(3) years of court interpreting experience. Experience should include
\ninterpreting for deaf individuals with special communication issues,
\nincluding individuals with additional disabilities, mental retardation,
\nmental illness and those with limited formal communication.<\/p>\n

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:
\nCourt Interpreter Certification (CIC) from the Board for Evaluation of
\nInterpreters of the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or
\nSpecial Certificate: Legal (SC: L) from the National Registry of
\nInterpreters for the Deaf to interpret court proceedings for a
\nhearing-impaired individual AND one of the following: Interpreter
\nCertification at Level III or III from the Board for Evaluation of
\nInterpreters of the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or
\nthe Comprehensive Skills Certificate (CSC), Reverse Skills Certificate
\n(RSC), Certificate of Transliteration (CT), Certificate of Interpretation
\n(CI), Oral Interpreting Certificate (OIC) or Certified Deaf
\nInterpreter-Provisional (CDI-P) from the National Registry of Interpreters
\nfor the Deaf; or their equivalent; OR,<\/p>\n

Interpreter Certification at Level Advanced, IV or IVi from the Board of
\nEvaluation of Interpreters of the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of
\nHearing; or Master’s Comprehensive Skills Certificate (MCSC), Certificate of
\nTransliteration (CT) AND Certificate of Interpretation (CI) or National
\nInterpreter Certification (NIC) from the National Registry of Interpreters
\nfor the Deaf; or their equivalent; OR,<\/p>\n

Interpreter Certification at Level V or Vi from the Board for Evaluation of
\nInterpreters of the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or
\nCertified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) or National Interpreter Certification (NIC)
\nat Advanced Level from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf;
\nor their equivalent; OR,<\/p>\n

Interpreter Certification at Master Level from the Board of Evaluation of
\nInterpreters of the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or
\nNational Interpreter Certification (NIC) at Master’s Level from National
\nRegistry of Interpreters for the Deaf; or their equivalent.<\/p>\n

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:<\/p>\n

Knowledge of:<\/p>\n

Manual communication in American Sign Language.
\nMethods of expressive and voice interpreting and their applications (e.g.,
\nSimultaneous and Consecutive).
\nIssues and terminology of the interpreting profession.
\nStandard practices and ethical standards in interpreting.
\nLegal terminology, procedures and court decorum.
\nCourt interpreter training.
\nComputer software applications, including word processing, presentations,
\nspreadsheets, databases, graphics, and other related applications.
\nBusiness letter writing, grammar and punctuation, and report preparation.<\/p>\n

Skill in:<\/p>\n

Assessing and matching the communication needs of the client(s) and the
\nsituation utilizing various interpreting techniques, which may include
\ngestures, other sign systems\/languages, formal American Sign Language, etc.
\nto ensure effective communication.
\nCoordinating and prioritizing the work and activities of self.
\nEnglish language vocabulary.
\nDealing with hostile, abusive or irrational individuals.
\nOperating a variety of modern office equipment, including a computer.
\nBoth verbal and written communication.<\/p>\n

Ability to:<\/p>\n

Respond appropriately to crisis situations.
\nInterpret accurately in court proceedings.
\nListen attentively for long periods of time.
\nPrepare accurate and complete records, reports and statistics.
\nManage time well, perform multiple tasks and organize diverse activities.
\nPerform in a stressful environment while maintaining a professional manner.
\nContinue professional growth through continuing education.
\nEstablish and maintain effective working relationships with deaf and hearing
\nclients, departmental clientele, representatives of outside agencies, other
\nCounty employees and officials, members of diverse cultural and linguistic
\nbackgrounds, attorneys, children, judges and the general public.
\nWork Environment & Other Information:
\nWorking conditions may be determined by the situation requiring interpreting
\nand may vary from the usual office or meeting room environment. Physical
\nrequirements may include the ability to lift\/carry up to 5-10 pounds
\noccasionally, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination
\nand manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer and office equipment.
\nSubject to reaching, twisting, handling and walking to perform the essential
\njob functions. Involves contact with clients in possible stressful
\nsituations.<\/p>\n

Hours: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and works sime nights and weekends.<\/p>\n
