Documents court and other legal<br \/>\nsituations (probation, jail, counseling, Commissioners Court, televised<br \/>\nmeetings) and other highly technical and complicated meetings and hearings.<br \/>\nProvides advocacy services regarding access by people who are deaf according<br \/>\nto applicable Federal, State and Local laws. Conducts outreach and education<br \/>\nto members of the community, staff, other departments, and the general<br \/>\npublic. Provides back-up assistance in scheduling\/coordinating interpreter<br \/>\nservices and other office duties,as required. Mentors other team<br \/>\ninterpreters.<br \/>\nProvides back-up assistance in scheduling\/coordinating interpreter services<br \/>\nand other office duties, as required. Mentors other team interpreters.<br \/>\nCreates and maintains service records of activities and participants.<br \/>\nPrepares reports and statistics.<br \/>\nPerforms other job-related duties as assigned.<\/p>\n<p>Minimum Requirements:<\/p>\n<p>Education and Experience:<\/p>\n<p>Bachelor&#8217;s degree in Deaf Education, Interpreting, Linguistics,<br \/>\nCommunications, Liberal Arts, Social or Behavioral Sciences or a directly<br \/>\nrelated field AND five (5) years interpreting services experience in a<br \/>\nvariety of community, health, governmental, and social situations, including<br \/>\nhighly technical or legal situations. Must have at least an additional three<br \/>\n(3) years of court interpreting experience. Experience should include<br \/>\ninterpreting for deaf individuals with special communication issues,<br \/>\nincluding individuals with additional disabilities, mental retardation,<br \/>\nmental illness and those with limited formal communication.<\/p>\n<p>Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:<br \/>\nCourt Interpreter Certification (CIC) from the Board for Evaluation of<br \/>\nInterpreters of the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or<br \/>\nSpecial Certificate: Legal (SC: L) from the National Registry of<br \/>\nInterpreters for the Deaf to interpret court proceedings for a<br \/>\nhearing-impaired individual AND one of the following: Interpreter<br \/>\nCertification at Level III or III from the Board for Evaluation of<br \/>\nInterpreters of the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or<br \/>\nthe Comprehensive Skills Certificate (CSC), Reverse Skills Certificate<br \/>\n(RSC), Certificate of Transliteration (CT), Certificate of Interpretation<br \/>\n(CI), Oral Interpreting Certificate (OIC) or Certified Deaf<br \/>\nInterpreter-Provisional (CDI-P) from the National Registry of Interpreters<br \/>\nfor the Deaf; or their equivalent; OR,<\/p>\n<p>Interpreter Certification at Level Advanced, IV or IVi from the Board of<br \/>\nEvaluation of Interpreters of the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of<br \/>\nHearing; or Master&#8217;s Comprehensive Skills Certificate (MCSC), Certificate of<br \/>\nTransliteration (CT) AND Certificate of Interpretation (CI) or National<br \/>\nInterpreter Certification (NIC) from the National Registry of Interpreters<br \/>\nfor the Deaf; or their equivalent; OR,<\/p>\n<p>Interpreter Certification at Level V or Vi from the Board for Evaluation of<br \/>\nInterpreters of the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or<br \/>\nCertified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) or National Interpreter Certification (NIC)<br \/>\nat Advanced Level from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf;<br \/>\nor their equivalent; OR,<\/p>\n<p>Interpreter Certification at Master Level from the Board of Evaluation of<br \/>\nInterpreters of the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or<br \/>\nNational Interpreter Certification (NIC) at Master&#8217;s Level from National<br \/>\nRegistry of Interpreters for the Deaf; or their equivalent.<\/p>\n<p>Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:<\/p>\n<p>Knowledge of:<\/p>\n<p>Manual communication in American Sign Language.<br \/>\nMethods of expressive and voice interpreting and their applications (e.g.,<br \/>\nSimultaneous and Consecutive).<br \/>\nIssues and terminology of the interpreting profession.<br \/>\nStandard practices and ethical standards in interpreting.<br \/>\nLegal terminology, procedures and court decorum.<br \/>\nCourt interpreter training.<br \/>\nComputer software applications, including word processing, presentations,<br \/>\nspreadsheets, databases, graphics, and other related applications.<br \/>\nBusiness letter writing, grammar and punctuation, and report preparation.<\/p>\n<p>Skill in:<\/p>\n<p>Assessing and matching the communication needs of the client(s) and the<br \/>\nsituation utilizing various interpreting techniques, which may include<br \/>\ngestures, other sign systems\/languages, formal American Sign Language, etc.<br \/>\nto ensure effective communication.<br \/>\nCoordinating and prioritizing the work and activities of self.<br \/>\nEnglish language vocabulary.<br \/>\nDealing with hostile, abusive or irrational individuals.<br \/>\nOperating a variety of modern office equipment, including a computer.<br \/>\nBoth verbal and written communication.<\/p>\n<p>Ability to:<\/p>\n<p>Respond appropriately to crisis situations.<br \/>\nInterpret accurately in court proceedings.<br \/>\nListen attentively for long periods of time.<br \/>\nPrepare accurate and complete records, reports and statistics.<br \/>\nManage time well, perform multiple tasks and organize diverse activities.<br \/>\nPerform in a stressful environment while maintaining a professional manner.<br \/>\nContinue professional growth through continuing education.<br \/>\nEstablish and maintain effective working relationships with deaf and hearing<br \/>\nclients, departmental clientele, representatives of outside agencies, other<br \/>\nCounty employees and officials, members of diverse cultural and linguistic<br \/>\nbackgrounds, attorneys, children, judges and the general public.<br \/>\nWork Environment &amp; Other Information:<br \/>\nWorking conditions may be determined by the situation requiring interpreting<br \/>\nand may vary from the usual office or meeting room environment. Physical<br \/>\nrequirements may include the ability to lift\/carry up to 5-10 pounds<br \/>\noccasionally, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination<br \/>\nand manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer and office equipment.<br \/>\nSubject to reaching, twisting, handling and walking to perform the essential<br \/>\njob functions.
