The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio won an $806,500
\ngrant from the U.S. Department of Education\u2019s Office of Special Education
\nand Rehabilitative Services to fund scholarships for 36 teachers and support
\nstaff.<\/p>\n

The scholarship money will be given to students interested in taking the
\nmaster of deaf education and hearing science program. Through this program,
\nteachers are trained to work with hearing-impaired children and help them
\nspeak. Children are taught to speak using a combination of amplification
\ntechnology and individual therapy.<\/p>\n

Enrollment in the university\u2019s program has grown from six students to 23
\nstudents ever since Blane Trautwein joined the Health Science Center staff
\nas director of the program in 2008.<\/p>\n

The Health Science Center Deaf Education and Hearing Science Program has a
\nclose partnership with the Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children in San
\nAntonio. Sunshine Cottage serves as a laboratory setting for the university.
\nStudents enrolled in the master\u2019s program participate in more than 350
\nclinical hours throughout the two-year master\u2019s program.<\/p>\n

The UT Health Science Center offers schools in medicine, nursing, dentistry,
\nhealth professions and graduate biomedical sciences.<\/p>\n
