TDI invites other consumer groups to join<br \/>\nin this petition such as American Association of Deaf Blind (AADB), American<br \/>\nAssociation of People with Disabilities (AAPD), Association of Late-Deafened<br \/>\nAdults (ALDA), California Coalition of Agencies Serving the Deaf and Hard of<br \/>\nHearing (CCASDHH), Communication Services for the Deaf (CSD), Deaf and Hard<br \/>\nof Hearing Consumer Advocacy Network (DHHCAN), Hearing Loss Association of<br \/>\nAmerica (HLAA) and National Association of the Deaf (NAD).<\/p>\n<p>TDI gratefully thanks Carol Harter, Carl Jensema, and Cliff Rowley of the<br \/>\nTucson Citizens for Better Captioning (TCBC), who has raised important<br \/>\nissues about the availability of real-time captioning for news and weather<br \/>\nprogramming outside the &#8220;Top 25&#8221; television markets, or Designated Market<br \/>\nAreas (DMAs). By gathering data from frustrated television viewers who<br \/>\ndepend on captioning, TCBC has demonstrated that grassroots advocacy on the<br \/>\nlocal level does have a major impact on national policy. TDI joins deaf and<br \/>\nhard of hearing viewers everywhere in advocating for more captioning.<\/p>\n<p>Before TDI can submit this petition to the FCC, we want to hear from you.<br \/>\nYour comments will help TDI further address the ongoing need to improve the<br \/>\nquality and availability of television captioning. This is your opportunity<br \/>\nto give your voice and ask the FCC to eliminate the three outdated<br \/>\nTV captioning waivers and exemptions for:<\/p>\n<p>* Programming that air between the hours of 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>* Commercials airing less than five minutes.<\/p>\n<p>* Live news programming in smaller television markets such as:<br \/>\no San Diego (CA) #28<br \/>\no Austin (TX) #44<br \/>\no New Orleans (LA) #52<br \/>\no Tucson (AZ) #67<br \/>\no Des Moines (IA) #73<br \/>\no Rochester (NY) #81<br \/>\no Madison (WI) #85<br \/>\no Sioux Falls (SD) #112<br \/>\no Erie (PA) #144<br \/>\no Eugene (OR) #118<br \/>\no and many other rural towns.<br \/>\no From: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvb.org\/rcentral\/markettrack\/US_HH_by_DMA.asp\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.tvb.org\/rcentral\/markettrack\/US_HH_by_DMA.asp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Your voice will tell the FCC that you want captions on all:<br \/>\n* TV shows, because captions will not bother others who are sleeping in the<br \/>\nmiddle of the night.<br \/>\n* TV commercials, because captions will help you learn more about products<br \/>\nand services on the market.<br \/>\n* TV newscasts in your hometown, because captions provide full access from<br \/>\nbeginning to end including news, weather and sports &#8211; just like the &#8220;Top 25&#8221;<br \/>\nmarkets anywhere in America.<\/p>\n<p>Please help TDI and other consumer groups by completing this survey, which<br \/>\nshould take you no more than five to ten minutes.
