Talking Art with James Sham<\/p>\n

Admission is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

American Sign Language interpretation will be provided.<\/p>\n

Arthouse at the Jones Center presents an artist talk with Houston-based
\nJames Sham, whose work \u201cClosed Caption\u201d inaugurates the LIFT Projects series
\npresented in the Arthouse elevator.<\/p>\n

Talking Art is an opportunity for visitors to engage more deeply with
\nArthouse exhibitions by participating in conversations led by exhibiting
\nartists and other experts in contemporary art and culture.<\/p>\n

Sham’s work is concerned with language, translation, and mistranslation and
\nhe explores these themes through video, performance, installation,
\nphotography, and sculpture.<\/p>\n

Sham states that it is commonly accepted that when learning a new language,
\nthe two most difficult to master elements are: 1) humor, and 2) poetry.<\/p>\n

In \u201cClose Caption,\u201d Sham merges these two facets of language in a witty
\ndemonstration of American Sign Language using DJ Kool’s song \u201cLet Me Clear
\nMy Throat\u201d as source material.<\/p>\n
