If you have a child age 14 &#8211; 17 (or if your child<br \/>\nhave a disability and age 14 &#8211; 22), you can sign your child up for summer<br \/>\nwork.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Work-Based Learning Program Gears Up For Summer 2011 Youth Employment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Work-Based Learning Program\/Summer Youth Employment (WBLP\/SYE) is a<br \/>\njoint venture of the City of Austin and Travis County Health &amp; Human<br \/>\nServices Departments that targets youth between the ages of 14 to 17 (14 to<br \/>\n22 for youth with disabilities) who reside in the City of Austin and\/or<br \/>\nTravis County, and attend school in the City of Austin and\/or Travis County.<br \/>\nYouth are recruited and referred through a number of avenues such as<br \/>\nfaith-based, non-profit, and community-based organizations. Other referrals<br \/>\nare made through advertisement, public service announcements, schools and<br \/>\nthe community-at-large.<\/p>\n<p>The Work-Based Learning Program\/Summer Youth Employment provides the<br \/>\nopportunity for young people to develop competence and confidence as well as<br \/>\nworkplace skills in a \u201creal-world of work\u201d environment. Youth will be<br \/>\nexposed to career awareness and exploration while developing their career<br \/>\nplans and a commitment to lifelong learning.  The program expands young<br \/>\npeople\u2019s choices in life by preparing them with necessary workforce skills<br \/>\nneeded to succeed as citizens and productive employees.  Youth have the<br \/>\nopportunity to learn academic subjects by seeing knowledge applied in the<br \/>\n\u201creal world of work\u201d and learn job-specific skills while being offered<br \/>\ninteraction with positive, successful adult role models who provide guidance<br \/>\nin setting and achieving goals.<\/p>\n<p>A key prerequisite of WBLP\/SYE includes Job-Readiness Training where young<br \/>\npeople gain the experience of applying for a job and earning a paycheck in a<br \/>\nnurturing environment with adult support and supervision.  The opportunity<br \/>\nto work an average of 96 hours in one of two sessions during the summer will<br \/>\nbe offered to youth participants.  Each youth employee is provided with a<br \/>\nbroad range of projects in work settings within the City of Austin and<br \/>\nTravis County, non-profit organizations, and private businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Parents can register youth for Job Readiness Training by calling<br \/>\n512?854?4590.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Parents: Please read.
