The City of Austin has agreed to provide CART for Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. This training program is free and open to everyone over 18 in Travis, Williamson, & Hays Counties. There are no other age limits or physical requirements for these volunteer positions; everyone can contribute in one way or another.<\/p>\n
Can you please help us spread the word about this training? We need to recruit as many hard of hearing and deaf people (and their families) as possible to take advantage of this rare opportunity.<\/p>\n
Participation in this program can help us learn how to protect our families and communities in emergencies such as major fires, floods, hazardous materials, terrorism, severe weather, medical emergencies, and pandemics. Participation can give us the opportunity to inform emergency planning personnel about issues of concern to people who are hard of hearing or deaf. It can also help encourage emergency responders to take whatever steps are necessary to provide us with information as accurate and timely as that provided to the rest of the community.<\/p>\n
The Core CERT training sessions will take place Tuesdays from 6pm to 9pm on the following dates:
\n– September 12
\n– September 19
\n– September 26
\n– October 3
\n– October 10<\/p>\n
Advanced CERT training
\n– October 17, Medical Operations 6pm to 9pm.
\n– October 21, Search and Rescue 12pm to 5pm<\/p>\n

The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the citizens of Austin need your help to prepare the community for a disaster! Austin’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) provides an excellent opportunity for Austinites to play an important role in helping to safeguard, prepare for and respond to major emergencies in our community. Training covers basic emergency preparedness, response capabilities, first aid, fire suppression and search and rescue procedures. CERT volunteers receive equipment to use when activated. The CERT program is supported by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).<\/p>\n
Example volunteer activities include the following:<\/p>\n
Before a disaster: Hazard awareness campaigns and presentations, special projects, disaster preparedness booths, volunteer recruiting, language translation of materials, disaster drills, and advanced training.<\/p>\n
During and after a disaster: Emergency communications, disaster hotline, managing spontaneous volunteers, language interpretation and translation, damage assessments. Community Emergency Response Teams<\/p>\n
