TEXAS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF RANGERS HOLD COURT, HOST NATIONAL DEAF BASKETBALL
\nTOURNAMENT & CHEER COMPETITION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Austin, Texas \u2013 January 11, 2011 Athletes from several of the top schools
\nfor the deaf in the country compete in Austin at the Texas School for the
\nDeaf (TSD) this weekend for the 11th Clerc Classic Basketball Tournament and
\nCheer Competition, hosted by the school at 1102 South Congress Avenue,
\nThursday-Saturday, January 13-15.<\/p>\n

TSD moved its\u2019 January 3 holiday to release students early this week and
\nmake room for the over 300 high school athletes, officials, coaches,
\nchaperones and school administrators visiting Austin and staying on campus
\nfor the weekend\u2019s events. Started in 2000, this is TSD\u2019s first time to host
\nthe Clerc Classic \u2013 named in honor of Laurent Clerc, who in 1817 co-founded
\nthe first school for the deaf in America.<\/p>\n

Tournament play kicks off Thursday at 8:00 a.m., through Saturday at 4:30
\np.m. The girls\u2019 championship game will be played Saturday at 6:15 p.m., and
\nthe boys at 8:00 p.m., with the tournament awards ceremony immediately
\nfollowing. The Clerc Classic Cheer Competition will begin Saturday at 12:3
\np.m.<\/p>\n

As part of Texas\u2019 Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS)
\nDivision, TSD plays against other Texas teams, but the chance to compete
\nagainst other Deaf athletes comes only a few times a year for TSD students.
\n\u201cWhat\u2019s unique about that”, says TSD\u2019s Athletic Director, Chris Hamilton,
\n\u201cis not only do students compete on the court, they all also socialize and
\nhang out together; they\u2019re friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is not something you tend to see among local-area high schools too
\nmuch. \u201cAmong the Deaf competitors, Hamilton continues, \u201cyou\u2019ll see a lot of
\ntrash talking on the court, but you will also see a lot of camaraderie and
\nsupport for one another. Even though they are from different states across
\nthe country, these kids all know each other from summer camps or other
\nsporting matchups and things. It\u2019s really a lot of fun for us all get
\ntogether. And for us coaches too, we can communicate directly. We are all
\nfriends – as well as colleagues – which is great.\u201d Hamilton is also bringing
\nin tournament officials who can all communicate in sign language.<\/p>\n

\nfor the Deaf, the California School for the Deaf\u2013Fremont, the California
\nSchool for the Deaf\u2013Riverside, The Indiana School for the Deaf, The Learning
\nCenter (in Massachusetts), the Maryland School for the Deaf, and the Model
