The Austin Community College District was picked to serve as a regional
\ncenter for Gallaudet University, a school that caters to the deaf and hard
\nof hearing.<\/p>\n

The Gallaudet University Southwest Regional Center will open Jan. 12 at 2
\np.m. in ACC\u2019s Riverside Campus. The public is invited to attend.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis partnership will be an incredible resource for deaf and hard of
\nhearing people and all others connected to the deaf community,\u201d said Lyman
\nGrant, dean of Arts and Humanities for ACC. \u201cBecause we already have such a
\nvibrant deaf culture at ACC, the addition of the Gallaudet University center
\njust seemed to be a natural fit.\u201d<\/p>\n

ACC already has several programs and services for its 150 deaf students,
\nplus others for those pursuing careers working with the deaf.<\/p>\n

The regional center will serve students in Texas, Arizona, Arkansas,
\nColorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Utah. Offerings will include
\ncourses, training workshops and support services.<\/p>\n

ACC enrolls more than 44,000 credit students and offers university transfer
\ncourses, two-year associate degrees, certificates and other college and
\ncareer preparatory programs. Gallaudet University was federally chartered in
\n1864.<\/p>\n
