Employers are included so as to identify innovative<br \/>\nmethods of recruiting persons who are deaf or hard of hearing as potential<br \/>\nemployees.<\/p>\n<p>Opening Keynote: Joe Bontke of Houston, Outreach Manger and Ombudsman, U.S.<br \/>\nEqual Employment Opportunity Commission Houston District Office.<\/p>\n<p>Overview: \u201cBackpacks and Baggage\u201d &#8211; The major barriers to achievement by<br \/>\npeople with disabilities in our society continues to be universal<br \/>\nstereotyped thinking and assumptions about what people can and cannot do.<br \/>\nThe fact is that the range of skills and abilities of persons within any<br \/>\ndisability group is enormous. The need is to get rid of stereotypical images<br \/>\nand view each individual as just that: \u201can individual.\u201d This training<br \/>\nsession will explore the \u201cbaggage of our own backpacks\u201d and attempt to<br \/>\nabolish old perceptions and add new perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsors: The Alamo Committee on Career Development for People with Hearing<br \/>\nLoss, which is comprised of the following partners: Great Opportunities,<br \/>\nTexas Diversity Council, DARS \u2013 Division for Rehabilitation Services, DARS<br \/>\n\u2013 Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, and U.S. Equal Employment<br \/>\nOpportunity Commission<\/p>\n<p>Target audience: College\/University Career Services, Disability Student<br \/>\nServices Offices and Businesses\/Employers<\/p>\n<p>Registration: Registration must be received by 2\/17\/2011.
