VSA Texas Presents an Installation at Access Gallery<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Community of Non-Normative Beings<\/p>\n

January 17 \u2013 February 25, 2011<\/p>\n

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 22, 2011 6:00-8:00 pm<\/p>\n

Janet Morrow is an MFA candidate from the University of Texas at Arlington.
\nHer work has been shown nationally and internationally, most recently at the
\nSmithsonian International Gallery with VSA. After losing her ability to
\nhear, Janet received bilateral cochlear implants (CI) and has regained some
\nhearing with her implants. Morrow\u2019s newest installation is based on how her
\nimplants translate sounds she hasn\u2019t heard before and themes of
\n\u201cotherness\u201d and disability. A Community of Non-Normative Beings uses
\ntransparent materials to form abstracted structures, which are inflated to
\ncreate sculptural bodies that float and shimmer in the gallery. Accompanied
\nby industrial interiors and a \u201cCI Sonatina\u201d, Morrow\u2019s art transcends human
\nfrailty, and identifies the joy that may be found in even painful
\nsituations.<\/p>\n

A Community of Non-Normative Beings will be on view at Access Gallery,
\nlocated at 3701 Guadalupe, Suite 103, at the corner of 37th and Guadalupe,
\nfrom January 17 through February 25, 2011. An Opening Reception will be held
\non Saturday, January 22 from 6-8 pm. Access Gallery promotes artists with
\ndisabilities from across the state of Texas. Gallery hours are Mondays
\nthrough Friday, 12 – 5 pm. For more information contact Access Gallery at
