After losing her ability to
hear, Janet received bilateral cochlear implants (CI) and has regained some
hearing with her implants. Morrow’s newest installation is based on how her
implants translate sounds she hasn’t heard before and themes of
“otherness” and disability. A Community of Non-Normative Beings uses
transparent materials to form abstracted structures, which are inflated to
create sculptural bodies that float and shimmer in the gallery. Accompanied
by industrial interiors and a “CI Sonatina”, Morrow’s art transcends human
frailty, and identifies the joy that may be found in even painful
situations.

A Community of Non-Normative Beings will be on view at Access Gallery,
located at 3701 Guadalupe, Suite 103, at the corner of 37th and Guadalupe,
from January 17 through February 25, 2011. An Opening Reception will be held
on Saturday, January 22 from 6-8 pm. Access Gallery promotes artists with
disabilities from across the state of Texas. Gallery hours are Mondays
through Friday, 12 – 5 pm. For more information contact Access Gallery at
512-323-6626 or accessgallery@vsatx.org.

About VSA arts

VSA Texas is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization that works to create a
society where people with disabilities freely learn through, participate in,
and enjoy the arts.
