The University seeks a person with high energy, enthusiasm<br \/>\nand vision to work within the department that is in the process of<br \/>\nprogrammatic expansion. The Department offers coursework at the<br \/>\nundergraduate level in the area of American Sign Language (BA-ASL), at the<br \/>\ngraduate level with a Master\u2019s degree (MS-Deaf Studies\/Deaf Education<br \/>\nand Doctoral degree Ed.D.) in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education. In addition<br \/>\nthe BA and MS areas offer coursework leading to teacher certification. The<br \/>\nsuccessful candidate will possess strong teaching, research, and writing<br \/>\nskills. The candidate must possess strong leadership skills<br \/>\nand interpersonal skills with demonstrated work experiences with colleagues<br \/>\nexhibiting positive collegiality.<\/p>\n<p>Responsibilities include:<br \/>\n1. Advise and counsel undergraduate ASL majors and graduate majors in<br \/>\nMasters and Doctoral Deaf Education programs.<br \/>\n2. Teach undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses within the Department<br \/>\nas program needs mandate.<br \/>\n3. Serve on departmental, college, and university committees as necessary.<br \/>\n4. Conduct research, scholarly activities, and grant writing to meet program<br \/>\nneeds.<br \/>\n5. Provide supervision for department majors during field experiences.<br \/>\n6. Meet other day-to-day responsibilities of the faculty position as<br \/>\nnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>Qualifications:<br \/>\nThe University seeks a person with knowledge, skills and proficiencies in<br \/>\nproviding training to students in careers related to ASL Studies and Deaf<br \/>\n\/ Studies Education. The successful candidate will have:<\/p>\n<p>1. Fluency in American Sign Language<br \/>\n2. An earned doctoral degree in Deaf Education, American Sign Language,<br \/>\nLinguistics, or a closely related field. ABDs may be considered.<br \/>\n3. Knowledge of Deaf culture and extensive personal and professional<br \/>\nexperiences within the Deaf community.<br \/>\n4. Ability to demonstrate depth of knowledge regarding the EC-12 application<br \/>\nof ASL\/English bilingual education and evidence based practices.<br \/>\n5. Ability to demonstrate depth of knowledge and understanding in ASL<br \/>\nacquisition by L1 and L2 learners.<br \/>\n6. Demonstrated teaching research and publication skills.<\/p>\n<p>Preference will be given to candidates:<br \/>\n1) who are Native ASL user.<br \/>\n2) with three years of classroom experience with EC-12 deaf children.<br \/>\n3) with experience supervising student teachers.<br \/>\n4) with CED certification.<br \/>\n5) with certification in Deaf Education and\/or ASL at the state-level (any<br \/>\nstate).<\/p>\n<p>Lamar University is a member of The Texas State University System, has an<br \/>\nenrollment of approximately 14,000 students, and offers a wide variety of<br \/>\nbaccalaureate and masters degrees, as well as doctorates in four<br \/>\ndisciplines. Lamar faculty have a strong commitment to teaching<br \/>\nexcellence combined with research. Non-traditional students comprise almost<br \/>\n25% of the student enrollment at this culturally diverse, metropolitan<br \/>\nuniversity, while 70% of the student body is full-time and under the age of<br \/>\n25. Located on the banks of the Neches River in Southeast Texas, Beaumont is<br \/>\nonly 85 miles from Houston and 35 miles from the Gulf of Mexico beaches.<br \/>\nLeisure opportunities abound nearby in the Big Thicket National Preserve and<br \/>\nlake areas of East Texas. A wide range of cultural activities are provided<br \/>\nthrough a regional symphony orchestra, art museum, historic houses, opera,<br \/>\nballet and theater companies. The cultural centers of Houston and Galveston<br \/>\noffer many kinds of aesthetic enrichment. A year-round temperate climate<br \/>\nincreases opportunities for outdoor recreational activities.<\/p>\n<p>The position will be available for the Fall of 2009. This is a 9-month<br \/>\nposition with the possibility of Summer teaching opportunities. This will be<br \/>\na tenured-track position with rank and salary appropriate to experience and<br \/>\nevidence of a terminal degree.
