Assistant\/Associate\/Full Professor in the Department of Deaf Studies and
\nDeaf Education<\/p>\n

Applications and nominations are invited for a faculty position in the Deaf
\nStudies and Deaf Education Department, pending available funding.<\/p>\n

Faculty reports to the Chair of the Deaf Studies and Deaf Education
\nDepartment. The University seeks a person with high energy, enthusiasm
\nand vision to work within the department that is in the process of
\nprogrammatic expansion. The Department offers coursework at the
\nundergraduate level in the area of American Sign Language (BA-ASL), at the
\ngraduate level with a Master\u2019s degree (MS-Deaf Studies\/Deaf Education
\nand Doctoral degree Ed.D.) in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education. In addition
\nthe BA and MS areas offer coursework leading to teacher certification. The
\nsuccessful candidate will possess strong teaching, research, and writing
\nskills. The candidate must possess strong leadership skills
\nand interpersonal skills with demonstrated work experiences with colleagues
\nexhibiting positive collegiality.<\/p>\n

Responsibilities include:
\n1. Advise and counsel undergraduate ASL majors and graduate majors in
\nMasters and Doctoral Deaf Education programs.
\n2. Teach undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses within the Department
\nas program needs mandate.
\n3. Serve on departmental, college, and university committees as necessary.
\n4. Conduct research, scholarly activities, and grant writing to meet program
\nneeds.
\n5. Provide supervision for department majors during field experiences.
\n6. Meet other day-to-day responsibilities of the faculty position as
\nnecessary.<\/p>\n

Qualifications:
\nThe University seeks a person with knowledge, skills and proficiencies in
\nproviding training to students in careers related to ASL Studies and Deaf
\n\/ Studies Education. The successful candidate will have:<\/p>\n

1. Fluency in American Sign Language
\n2. An earned doctoral degree in Deaf Education, American Sign Language,
\nLinguistics, or a closely related field. ABDs may be considered.
\n3. Knowledge of Deaf culture and extensive personal and professional
\nexperiences within the Deaf community.
\n4. Ability to demonstrate depth of knowledge regarding the EC-12 application
\nof ASL\/English bilingual education and evidence based practices.
\n5. Ability to demonstrate depth of knowledge and understanding in ASL
\nacquisition by L1 and L2 learners.
\n6. Demonstrated teaching research and publication skills.<\/p>\n

Preference will be given to candidates:
\n1) who are Native ASL user.
\n2) with three years of classroom experience with EC-12 deaf children.
\n3) with experience supervising student teachers.
\n4) with CED certification.
\n5) with certification in Deaf Education and\/or ASL at the state-level (any
\nstate).<\/p>\n

Lamar University is a member of The Texas State University System, has an

\nbaccalaureate and masters degrees, as well as doctorates in four
\ndisciplines. Lamar faculty have a strong commitment to teaching
\nexcellence combined with research. Non-traditional students comprise almost
\n25% of the student enrollment at this culturally diverse, metropolitan
\nuniversity, while 70% of the student body is full-time and under the age of
\n25. Located on the banks of the Neches River in Southeast Texas, Beaumont is
\nonly 85 miles from Houston and 35 miles from the Gulf of Mexico beaches.
\nLeisure opportunities abound nearby in the Big Thicket National Preserve and
\nlake areas of East Texas. A wide range of cultural activities are provided
\nthrough a regional symphony orchestra, art museum, historic houses, opera,
\nballet and theater companies. The cultural centers of Houston and Galveston
\noffer many kinds of aesthetic enrichment. A year-round temperate climate
\nincreases opportunities for outdoor recreational activities.<\/p>\n

The position will be available for the Fall of 2009. This is a 9-month
\nposition with the possibility of Summer teaching opportunities. This will be
\na tenured-track position with rank and salary appropriate to experience and
\nevidence of a terminal degree. Review of applications will begin
