2011 TSID Conference Corpus Christi
\nFrom the Scholarship and Awards Committee<\/strong><\/p>\n

TSID members, as we approach this year\u2019s 2011 conference pause and take in
\nconsideration those individuals who have made a mark upon the interpreting
\nprofession, whose influence has made an impact on how we do our job. The
\nindividual should be someone who is significantly connected and well known
\namongst the interpreting and Deaf community alike. IF you know someone who
\nwould meet the criteria listed below then please follow the instructions and
\nmake your nomination for the TISD conference in Corpus Christi this summer.<\/p>\n

1. The Bob Alcorn Award<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Membership of TSID, at the 1997 annual conference in Austin, voted to
\nestablish \u201cThe Bob Alcorn Award\u201d. This award is to be given to a person who
\nhas made significant contributions to the field of interpreting. Bob Alcorn
\n(1945 \u2013 1996) was a tremendous voice for the Deaf community and for
\ninterpreters. He led the field with his teaching, advocacy skills, and
\ntalents. The award is dedicated to the memory of Bob Alcorn: author,
\nteacher, Deaf Rights advocate, Deaf Culture ambassador, ASL champion,
\nstudent of life, and beloved friend. The \u201cBob Alcorn Award\u201d Nominations
\nCommittee will strive to honor those persons who have exemplified the
\nqualities, which Bob Alcorn demonstrated throughout his life. This award is
\nnot necessarily an annual award and will be given judiciously, in order to
\nmaintain the spirit of this special recognition bestowed by TSID.<\/p>\n

CRITERIA<\/p>\n

* This person serves as a role model for people in the field of
\ninterpreting; demonstrating that they are an ally of Deaf people, teaching,
\nmentoring and\/or having developed instructional materials for ASL, and\/or
\ninterpreter training.
\n* This person is one who respects people from all walks of life, regardless
\nof their ability to hear, race, economic status, etc. He\/she encourages
\nstudents\/people to grow to their maximum potential.
\n* This person is a Deaf Rights advocate, a staunch proponent of ASL and Deaf
\nCulture. This can be demonstrated in his\/her teaching, interpreting and
\nadvocating.
\n* This person is currently or has been a Texas resident, and has contributed
\nto the field of interpreting or deafness in a significant way, in the state
\nof Texas.
\n* This person must be a current TSID member.<\/p>\n

NOMINATION PROCEDURE<\/p>\n

Three letters\/videotapes of recommendation are needed to consider a person
\nfor this award. Letters\/videotapes should be sent to the TSID President.<\/p>\n

At least one recommendation\/videotape must be from a Deaf person.<\/p>\n

Each recommendation\/videotape is to include the following:<\/p>\n

a) Nominee\/Candidate\u2019s name;
\nb) Nominee\/Candidate\u2019s address;
\nc) Details of the candidate\u2019s background;
\nd) Description of how the candidate meets each of the criteria above.
\ne) Name, address, phone number or email address, of the person making the
\nnomination. (The Bob Alcorn Award nominations committee may contact the
\nnominator if they have any questions or need clarification).<\/p>\n

BOB ALCORN AWARD NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE<\/p>\n

The \u201cBob Alcorn Award Nominations Committee\u201d, will consist of the following
\nfive members:<\/p>\n

1. TSID President
\n2. TSID Board Member or a Chapter Board Member appointed by the TSID
\nPresident
\n3. Person from the interpreter training \/interpreter services field
\nappointed by the TSID Board
\n4. Member of the Deaf community\/ASL advocate appointed by the TSID Board
\n5. Member-at-large appointed by the TSID Board<\/p>\n

2. TSID \/ Jonnie Duncan Student Scholarship<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jonnie Duncan Student Trust Fund<\/p>\n

Purpose: To provide financial assistance for leadership training to students
\nin the interpreting profession.<\/p>\n

How funds can be used: Funds are currently limited to the registration for
\nthe TSID Annual Conference.<\/p>\n

Priorities<\/p>\n

Students enrolled in Texas Interpreter Training or Interpreter Preparation
\nPrograms (ITPs or IPPs) who desire leadership training and exposure at the
\nstate level.<\/p>\n

Deadline: 60 days prior to the early bird registration deadline for the TSID
\nAnnual Conference<\/p>\n

Criteria:
\nJonnie Duncan Trust Fund<\/p>\n

a. The eligibility requirements, which all applicants must meet to qualify
\nfor consideration, are as follows:<\/p>\n

i. Must be a current member of TSID.
\nii. Must be currently enrolled in a program to train interpreters.
\niii. May not be certified at a level higher than Texas BEI Level I or Basic.
\niv. Must submit the following to TSID scholarship committee at least sixty
\n(60) days prior to the early bird registration date of the event:<\/p>\n

* a completed application form
\n* copy of your TSID membership card
\n* two (2) completed recommendation forms [one (1) from an instructor, one
\n(1) from an interpreter in the field]
\n* a brief statement explaining the total costs to attend the event and the
\namount you are requesting<\/p>\n

b. Responsibilities of the recipients for the annual TSID Conference are as
\nfollows:<\/p>\n

i. Attend and assist with workshops at the annual conference.
\nii. Attend and assist with the TSID Business meeting.
\niii. Perform all duties as assigned.
\niv. Encourage all other students to participate in the conference and
\nnetwork with one another.
\nv. Attend the Student Forum.
\nvi. Write a short article about your experience for the InterpreTexan within
\nthirty (30) days following the conference.
\nvii. If these responsibilities are not met, TSID may request reimbursement
\nof conference expenses<\/p>\n

c. Responsibilities of scholarship recipients for events other than the TSID
\nAnnual Conference are as follows:<\/p>\n

i. Provide a copy of at least one or more of the following documents:<\/p>\n

1. Certificate of attendance
\n2. Event schedule<\/p>\n

ii. Write a short article about your experience for the InterpreTexan within
\nthirty (30) days following the event.
\niii. If these responsibilities are not met, TSID may request reimbursement
\nof expenses<\/p>\n

*** The number of scholarship recipients and amounts are contingent based on
\nthe available funds during the awarding year. ***<\/p>\n

3. TSID \/ Don England Trust Fund<\/strong><\/p>\n

Don England Trust Fund<\/p>\n

Purpose: To provide financial assistance for TSID members to obtain training
\nrelated to the field of interpreting.<\/p>\n

How funds can be used: Funds may be used for any training related to the
\nfield of interpreting including the cost of registration, transportation,
\nlodging, materials required for event. Applications for the TSID Conference
\nare given priority. Remaining funds are used to cover applications on a
\nfirst-come, first-served basis.<\/p>\n

Priorities<\/p>\n

Financial need evidenced, Interpreter Training or Interpreter Preparation
\nProgram (ITP or IPP) student, TSID functions, interpreter in the field,
\nmembership(s) in RID\/TSID (required)\/local chapters, volunteer services
\nevidenced and request for only partial costs.<\/p>\n

Deadline: 60 Days prior to the event to be attended.<\/p>\n
