TSID \/ Don England Trust Fund<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>2011 TSID Conference Corpus Christi<br \/>\nFrom the Scholarship and Awards Committee<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TSID members, as we approach this year\u2019s 2011 conference pause and take in<br \/>\nconsideration those individuals who have made a mark upon the interpreting<br \/>\nprofession, whose influence has made an impact on how we do our job. The<br \/>\nindividual should be someone who is significantly connected and well known<br \/>\namongst the interpreting and Deaf community alike. IF you know someone who<br \/>\nwould meet the criteria listed below then please follow the instructions and<br \/>\nmake your nomination for the TISD conference in Corpus Christi this summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. The Bob Alcorn Award<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Membership of TSID, at the 1997 annual conference in Austin, voted to<br \/>\nestablish \u201cThe Bob Alcorn Award\u201d. This award is to be given to a person who<br \/>\nhas made significant contributions to the field of interpreting. Bob Alcorn<br \/>\n(1945 \u2013 1996) was a tremendous voice for the Deaf community and for<br \/>\ninterpreters. He led the field with his teaching, advocacy skills, and<br \/>\ntalents. The award is dedicated to the memory of Bob Alcorn: author,<br \/>\nteacher, Deaf Rights advocate, Deaf Culture ambassador, ASL champion,<br \/>\nstudent of life, and beloved friend. The \u201cBob Alcorn Award\u201d Nominations<br \/>\nCommittee will strive to honor those persons who have exemplified the<br \/>\nqualities, which Bob Alcorn demonstrated throughout his life. This award is<br \/>\nnot necessarily an annual award and will be given judiciously, in order to<br \/>\nmaintain the spirit of this special recognition bestowed by TSID.<\/p>\n<p>CRITERIA<\/p>\n<p>* This person serves as a role model for people in the field of<br \/>\ninterpreting; demonstrating that they are an ally of Deaf people, teaching,<br \/>\nmentoring and\/or having developed instructional materials for ASL, and\/or<br \/>\ninterpreter training.<br \/>\n* This person is one who respects people from all walks of life, regardless<br \/>\nof their ability to hear, race, economic status, etc. He\/she encourages<br \/>\nstudents\/people to grow to their maximum potential.<br \/>\n* This person is a Deaf Rights advocate, a staunch proponent of ASL and Deaf<br \/>\nCulture. This can be demonstrated in his\/her teaching, interpreting and<br \/>\nadvocating.<br \/>\n* This person is currently or has been a Texas resident, and has contributed<br \/>\nto the field of interpreting or deafness in a significant way, in the state<br \/>\nof Texas.<br \/>\n* This person must be a current TSID member.<\/p>\n<p>NOMINATION PROCEDURE<\/p>\n<p>Three letters\/videotapes of recommendation are needed to consider a person<br \/>\nfor this award. Letters\/videotapes should be sent to the TSID President.<\/p>\n<p>At least one recommendation\/videotape must be from a Deaf person.<\/p>\n<p>Each recommendation\/videotape is to include the following:<\/p>\n<p>a) Nominee\/Candidate\u2019s name;<br \/>\nb) Nominee\/Candidate\u2019s address;<br \/>\nc) Details of the candidate\u2019s background;<br \/>\nd) Description of how the candidate meets each of the criteria above.<br \/>\ne) Name, address, phone number or email address, of the person making the<br \/>\nnomination. (The Bob Alcorn Award nominations committee may contact the<br \/>\nnominator if they have any questions or need clarification).<\/p>\n<p>BOB ALCORN AWARD NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cBob Alcorn Award Nominations Committee\u201d, will consist of the following<br \/>\nfive members:<\/p>\n<p>1. TSID President<br \/>\n2. TSID Board Member or a Chapter Board Member appointed by the TSID<br \/>\nPresident<br \/>\n3. Person from the interpreter training \/interpreter services field<br \/>\nappointed by the TSID Board<br \/>\n4. Member of the Deaf community\/ASL advocate appointed by the TSID Board<br \/>\n5. Member-at-large appointed by the TSID Board<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. TSID \/ Jonnie Duncan Student Scholarship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jonnie Duncan Student Trust Fund<\/p>\n<p>Purpose: To provide financial assistance for leadership training to students<br \/>\nin the interpreting profession.<\/p>\n<p>How funds can be used: Funds are currently limited to the registration for<br \/>\nthe TSID Annual Conference.<\/p>\n<p>Priorities<\/p>\n<p>Students enrolled in Texas Interpreter Training or Interpreter Preparation<br \/>\nPrograms (ITPs or IPPs) who desire leadership training and exposure at the<br \/>\nstate level.<\/p>\n<p>Deadline: 60 days prior to the early bird registration deadline for the TSID<br \/>\nAnnual Conference<\/p>\n<p>Links to the applications:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tsid.org\/scholarships\/jonnieDuncanStudentTrustFundApp.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Click to access jonnieDuncanStudentTrustFundApp.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/tsid.org\/scholarships\/jonnieDuncanStudentTrustFundApp.doc<\/p>\n<p>Criteria:<br \/>\nJonnie Duncan Trust Fund<\/p>\n<p>a. The eligibility requirements, which all applicants must meet to qualify<br \/>\nfor consideration, are as follows:<\/p>\n<p>i. Must be a current member of TSID.<br \/>\nii. Must be currently enrolled in a program to train interpreters.<br \/>\niii. May not be certified at a level higher than Texas BEI Level I or Basic.<br \/>\niv. Must submit the following to TSID scholarship committee at least sixty<br \/>\n(60) days prior to the early bird registration date of the event:<\/p>\n<p>* a completed application form<br \/>\n* copy of your TSID membership card<br \/>\n* two (2) completed recommendation forms [one (1) from an instructor, one<br \/>\n(1) from an interpreter in the field]<br \/>\n* a brief statement explaining the total costs to attend the event and the<br \/>\namount you are requesting<\/p>\n<p>b. Responsibilities of the recipients for the annual TSID Conference are as<br \/>\nfollows:<\/p>\n<p>i. Attend and assist with workshops at the annual conference.<br \/>\nii. Attend and assist with the TSID Business meeting.<br \/>\niii. Perform all duties as assigned.<br \/>\niv. Encourage all other students to participate in the conference and<br \/>\nnetwork with one another.<br \/>\nv. Attend the Student Forum.<br \/>\nvi. Write a short article about your experience for the InterpreTexan within<br \/>\nthirty (30) days following the conference.<br \/>\nvii. If these responsibilities are not met, TSID may request reimbursement<br \/>\nof conference expenses<\/p>\n<p>c. Responsibilities of scholarship recipients for events other than the TSID<br \/>\nAnnual Conference are as follows:<\/p>\n<p>i. Provide a copy of at least one or more of the following documents:<\/p>\n<p>1. Certificate of attendance<br \/>\n2. Event schedule<\/p>\n<p>ii. Write a short article about your experience for the InterpreTexan within<br \/>\nthirty (30) days following the event.<br \/>\niii. If these responsibilities are not met, TSID may request reimbursement<br \/>\nof expenses<\/p>\n<p>*** The number of scholarship recipients and amounts are contingent based on<br \/>\nthe available funds during the awarding year. ***<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. TSID \/ Don England Trust Fund<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don England Trust Fund<\/p>\n<p>Purpose: To provide financial assistance for TSID members to obtain training<br \/>\nrelated to the field of interpreting.<\/p>\n<p>How funds can be used: Funds may be used for any training related to the<br \/>\nfield of interpreting including the cost of registration, transportation,<br \/>\nlodging, materials required for event. Applications for the TSID Conference<br \/>\nare given priority.
