Ingelore Herz Honigstein was born in Kuppenheim, Germany in 1924. Deaf and
\nJewish, she was considered a double outcast. Embarrassed by her disability,
\nIngelore’s parent made no attempts to communicate with her, resulting in
\ndelayed speech, completing her sentence at age 12. She entered first grade
\nat age 13, but her education was cut short by kristallnacht, after which
\nIngelore was thrown out of school.<\/p>\n

The film chronicles Ingelore’s trials and tribulations in Nazi-controlled
\nGermany and her escape to America. Her story includes a brutal rape by Nazi
\ncadets, a kind New York doctor who performs an illegal abortion in 1940 and
\nher lessons of personal freedom.<\/p>\n
