{"id":14124,"date":"2011-04-28T14:10:08","date_gmt":"2011-04-28T19:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=14124"},"modified":"2011-04-28T14:38:09","modified_gmt":"2011-04-28T19:38:09","slug":"advocacy-strategies-for-ensuring-communication-access-serving-people-who-are-dhh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2011\/04\/28\/advocacy-strategies-for-ensuring-communication-access-serving-people-who-are-dhh\/","title":{"rendered":"Advocacy Strategies for Ensuring Communication Access Serving People who are D\/HH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DARS Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services presents<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advocacy Strategies for Ensuring Communication Access<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Serving People who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Training Objective<\/p>\n<p>To provide training that will enhance the knowledge and ability of service<br \/>\nproviders to advocate for equal communication opportunities and effective<br \/>\ncommunication for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-requisite Required<\/p>\n<p>Participants are required to complete and submit a research component in<br \/>\nadvance of the training date that requires 11-12 hours of work. Participants<br \/>\nwho hold certified rehabilitation counselor certification may earn CEUs for<br \/>\nthis work as well as class time. The purpose of the research project is to<br \/>\nget everyone on the same page with the knowledge needed to provide effective<br \/>\nadvocacy for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. This project will be<br \/>\ndue by a specified date prior to the training based on each training date<br \/>\ngiven below:<\/p>\n<p>The training site will be provided for participants once their project has<br \/>\nbeen submitted and accepted by Randi Turner, training coordinator. A list of<br \/>\nlocal hotels near the training location will be provided after participants<br \/>\nhave registered.<\/p>\n<p>Projected Learning Outcomes<\/p>\n<p>Participants will be provided a check list of the threshold elements<br \/>\nrequired for entitlement to reasonable accommodation;<\/p>\n<p>Participants will learn how to apply the concepts of qualified individual<br \/>\nwith a disability, effective communication, auxiliary aids and services,<br \/>\nundue burden\/hardship, and direct threat, among others, to day-to-day<br \/>\nadvocacy strategies;<\/p>\n<p>Participants will be acquainted with case law impacting people with<br \/>\ndisabilities and will be provided up-to-date information on the ADA<br \/>\nAmendments Act that went into effect January 1, 2009 and the new Title II &amp;<br \/>\nIII Regulations that went into effect March 15, 2011; and<\/p>\n<p>Participants, through case examples presented in breakout sessions, will<br \/>\nlearn creative and effective negotiation strategies to achieve reasonable<br \/>\naccommodations and communication access for people who are deaf or hard of<br \/>\nhearing.<\/p>\n<p>Presenter<\/p>\n<p>Randi Turner, Communication Access Specialist with the DARS Office for Deaf<br \/>\nand Hard of Hearing Services, and Wendy Wilkinson, Attorney and Director of<br \/>\nthe DBTAC Southwest ADA Center<\/p>\n<p>Target Audience<\/p>\n<p>Directors and\/or Interpreter coordination staff of independent living and<br \/>\ndeaf and hard of hearing centers, job development\/job placement staff and<br \/>\nVocational Rehabilitation Counselors serving people who are deaf or hard of<br \/>\nhearing, and individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing who want to become<br \/>\neffective advocates.<\/p>\n<p>To Register<\/p>\n<p>Send an email to dhhstraining@dars.state.tx.us, or call 512.407.3267 (V),<br \/>\n161.137.23.203 (VP), or 512.407.3251 (TTY) requesting registration<br \/>\ninformation.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-requisite Date: May 16, 2011<\/p>\n<p>Training Date Location: June 2-4, 2011 Houston, Texas<\/p>\n<p>June 2, 1 pm &#8211; 5 pm<br \/>\nJune 3, 8 am &#8211; 5 pm<br \/>\nJune 4, 8 am &#8211; 12 pm<\/p>\n<p>To print the promotional brochure, go to this link.
