{"id":14308,"date":"2011-05-09T20:19:41","date_gmt":"2011-05-10T01:19:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=14308"},"modified":"2011-05-09T20:54:29","modified_gmt":"2011-05-10T01:54:29","slug":"american-society-for-deaf-children-conference-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2011\/05\/09\/american-society-for-deaf-children-conference-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"American Society for Deaf Children Conference 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>American Society for Deaf Children (ASDC) 2011 Conference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Parent Choices: Keys to Your Child\u2019s Future<\/p>\n<p>JUNE 22-26, 2011<\/p>\n<p>Location: Maryland School for the Deaf<\/p>\n<p>Crucial information and resources to help families<br \/>\nunderstand and successfully raise<br \/>\ndeaf and hard of hearing children.<\/p>\n<p>Conference objectives are to:<\/p>\n<p>* Increase parents\u2019 awareness and knowledge of key issues related to raising<br \/>\na deaf child.<br \/>\n* Support parents\u2019 ability to make choices that positively impact their<br \/>\nchild\u2019s development.<br \/>\n* Provide information and experiences that strengthen relationships and<br \/>\npromote understanding and acceptance among parents, hearing siblings, and<br \/>\ndeaf children.<\/p>\n<p>Planned and hosted by Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD), it is the biennial<br \/>\nconference of The American Society for Deaf Children (ASDC).<\/p>\n<p>About ASDC and MSD<\/p>\n<p>ASDC is the primary independent non-profit organization in the U.S. that<br \/>\nsupports and educates families with deaf or hard of hearing children. More<br \/>\ninformation can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deafchildren.org\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.deafchildren.org<\/a> .<br \/>\nMSD is an independent state agency and Maryland\u2019s center of knowledge and<br \/>\nexperience in the education of deaf and hard of hearing children from birth<br \/>\nto age 21.  More information can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msd.edu\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.msd.edu<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p>Who Should Attend<\/p>\n<p>Any parent of a deaf or hard of hearing infant, child, or teenager will<br \/>\nbenefit from this conference and is encouraged to attend. More than 500<br \/>\nparticipants are expected. Over half will be parents, both hearing and deaf.<br \/>\nMany will bring their children. Families that have attended a previous<br \/>\nconference often return to continue to benefit from conference activities.<br \/>\nThey are mentors and role models for new participants.<\/p>\n<p>Parent Choices: Keys to Your Child\u2019s Future<\/p>\n<p>This theme reflects Frederick area history and examines opportunities and<br \/>\nchoices in five key areas of critical importance to families with deaf<br \/>\nchildren\u2014Family, Communication, Education, Extracurricular Opportunities,<br \/>\nand Community. Participants will learn from professional experts in relevant<br \/>\nfields and benefit from meeting and networking with local, regional, and<br \/>\nnational service providers, exhibitors, and other families.<\/p>\n<p>Conference Schedule<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday Registration and the Opening \u201cSample Our City\u201d Family Fun Night!<br \/>\nFamilies will sample menu items from Frederick area restaurants, learn about<br \/>\nFrederick cultural venues, shop at local merchant booths, and enjoy<br \/>\nactivities such as face painting, a petting zoo, games, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday through Saturday \u2013 Activities include:<\/p>\n<p>Daytime Activities: Include Keynote Speakers, Parent Workshops, and the<br \/>\nChildren\u2019s Program<\/p>\n<p>Parent Workshops: Three full days of concurrent workshops on issues,<br \/>\nchoices, consequences, and the many available resources that can profoundly<br \/>\nimpact the development of deaf or hard of hearing children.  Professionals<br \/>\nwill present in each of the five key areas covering such diverse topics as<br \/>\nfamily dynamics, cochlear implant effective use, language development,<br \/>\nsecondary conditions, education choices, community support options and<br \/>\naccess, and many more.<\/p>\n<p>Children\u2019s Program: A comprehensive three-day program of planned, supervised<br \/>\nactivities for children and teens ages 0 to 21 in four age groups. The<br \/>\ninformational needs and unique experiences of deaf youth and siblings will<br \/>\nbe addressed through art, drama, and team building activities; sibling<br \/>\nworkshops; and games, field trips, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Evening Activities:  Family oriented activities each evening offer family<br \/>\nand social time. On one evening,  participants will explore Frederick\u2019s<br \/>\nsights, shops, galleries, and parks; enjoy dinner on their own; and<br \/>\nexperience living history through Ghost Tours.<\/p>\n<p>Exhibit Hall: Sponsors, businesses related to any of the conference key<br \/>\nareas, educational institutions and organizations, and local agencies and<br \/>\nvendors will display information and products in the Exhibit Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Museum: MSD\u2019s Bjorlee Museum is packed with historic information and<br \/>\nartifacts relating to the school, Frederick, the Hessian Barracks, multiple<br \/>\nwars, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday morning \u2013 Final breakfast and Conference Wrap-Up; airport<br \/>\ntransportation provided.<\/p>\n<p>Lodging and Transportation<\/p>\n<p>Two Frederick hotels have blocked rooms at special rates.
