Subject: Results of the 46th biennial conference in Big Spring (SWCID)<\/p>\n

Austin \u2013 Texas Association of the Deaf (TAD) is pleased to announce the
\nresults of the 46th conference in Big Spring, Texas, which took place from
\nJune 16 to 18 at SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf (SWCID). More
\nthan 100 registered people braved the daily century temperatures that went
\nas high as 113 degrees. It was TAD\u2019s 125th birthday celebration, too, but
\nno proverbial fireworks, due to extreme drought warnings.<\/p>\n

Making sure everyone was kept cool were the co-chairs Kathy Weldon and
\nSteven Meyer. Keynoters were Mark Gobble, Carrie Lou Garberoglio and Howard
\nA. Rosenblum. Giving the opening welcome remarks with a strong historical
\nemphasis was Dr. Cheryl L. Sparks, President of Howard County Junior College
\nDistrict. Dr. Sparks pointed out that TAD played a primary role in the
\nestablishment of SWCID as far back as 1979. She singled out three founding
\nfaculty members in the audience: Larry D. Evans, Marcus Myers and Dr. Steve
\nBaldwin, officers of TAD during the awards event.<\/p>\n

Award winners at the conference as follows:<\/p>\n

TAD Presidential Awards: Anita Dallas, Amanda Tuite, Billy Collins, Jr.,
\nKathy Weldon, Steve Meyer, SWCID
\nSpecial Awards: Barrientos Award to Jose Ovi Velasquez, Arnold Award to
\nCathy Ware
\nTAD Volunteer Award: Chris Kearney, Marilyn Swanson, Peggy Ann Wenger
\nTAD Education Award: Claire Bugen, Susie Grona
\nTAD Distinguished Service Award: Dr. Steve Baldwin
\nTAD\/NAD Golden Hand Award: Susan Tiller<\/p>\n

Chaired by Karl Ewan, one of the highlights of the conference was the
\nelection of officers for 2011 to 2013, which is as follows:<\/p>\n

President: Larry D. Evans (Austin)
\nVice President: Marcus Myers (Corpus Christi)
\nSecretary: Marianne Sasseen (Rowlett)
\nTreasurer: Steven Meyer (Big Spring)
\nDirector for six years: Paul Rutowski (Austin)
\n2nd Director: Cindi Nagy -2 years left (Plano)
\n3rd Director: Susie Grona \u2013 4 years left (Hideaway)<\/p>\n

Historically speaking, Evans is the first person to serve in the
\npresidential capacity in three different decades since TAD was founded in
\n1886. Sasseen will serve as secretary for the second time, which is a rare
\nfeat. Newest officer is Steven Meyer as treasurer. Former President Paul
\nRutowski is the newest board director who will make sure some of the TAD
\ngoals of reaching out to the Texas youth remain intact.<\/p>\n
