TJC ITP is sponsoring Brandon Morgan\u2019s workshop \u201cNavigating the Cold Waters
\nof Frozen Legal Text\u201d Saturday, October 1, 2011 9 a.m. \u2013 4 p.m. Legal
\nceu\u2019s pending approval. While it is targeted to certified and legal
\ninterpreters, students will learn as well.<\/p>\n

Workshop\/Course Description: Some of the most commonly encountered legal
\ntexts can sometimes be the most difficult to interpret, among these are
\nMiranda Warning and guilty plea litany. Having a prepared interpretation and
\ndeeper understanding of these routine texts are powerful tools the legal
\ninterpreter can use to increase effectiveness in communication.<\/p>\n

In this session, participants will learn various strategies for extracting
\nembedded information and making it explicit to deaf suspects. Additionally,
\nthe implications of the recent Supreme Court decision regarding Miranda
\nRights will be examined. Through language models and text analysis, workshop
\nattendees will gain confidence in developing a conceptually accurate and
\nculturally appropriate interpretation of these common frozen legal texts.<\/p>\n
